Artist in residence
@nicegmo hosted a writing workshop on Sunday.
This workshop focused on building poems and writing the poems on a brick.
Each person wrote down ten random words on ten tiny pieces of paper and gave the words to the person next to them.
The ten words were scattered, far-reaching and off-balance. For example:
(whetstone, santa, calamari, rodent, dragonfly, angle, mercury, celebrate, happyslap, killerwhale)
Each person worked with those ten random words and built a poem. We added adjectives, connectives, and other words to build a larger poem.
The poems were written on paper,
however each person is given a brick and is encouraged to write their poem on that brick.
You take the brick with you after the session to do whatever you feel is necessary.
We drew inspiration from work by Hema Shironi and the late Jamie Reid.
In the workshop space there were two copies of poetry books by the Pegasus Poets for people to read.
Pegasus were active from 2005-2016 at Hilldrop Community Centre in Holloway Road, London.
Many of our elders were part of this group and encouraged us as children to participate in this simple 10 words activity.
