What does immigration have to do with the future of American music? In this personal message, Next Fest Founder @peteraskim shares how arriving in America shaped our 2026 Festival - and why we’re spotlighting women immigrant composers and global emerging artists for America’s 250th anniversary. RIGHT NOW, we urgently need your support to make this season possible. Though it costs $5,000 to support each of our 21 Fellows, artists pay only what they can afford - often nothing at all. If you believe fresh voices in music deserve to be heard, make a tax-deductible donation today. SUPPORT WHAT’S NEXT IN MUSIC: next-fest.org/support And, get ready for our 2026 program, featuring works by GRAMMY®-nominated @andrea_casarrubios (Spain), @niloufar.nourbakhsh (Iran/US), @adeliiacomposer (Uzbekistan), @wanglu.composer (China), @clariceassad (Brazil), and Aleksandra Vrebalov (Serbia). Swipe from @peteraskim as a child newly arriving in America to the global artists making uniquely American music that your tax-deductible donation supports. Read the story below for more. SUPPORT WHAT’S NEXT IN MUSIC: next-fest.org/support Born in Denmark to an American mother and Norwegian father, Next Fest Director Peter Askim arrived in the U.S. at four years old with a funny accent, unusual foods in his lunchbox, and the feeling of both belonging and seeing America from the outside. THAT PERSPECTIVE shaped Next Fest 2026. For America’s 250th anniversary, we’re spotlighting women immigrant composers including GRAMMY®-nominated @andrea_casarrubios (Spain), @niloufar.nourbakhsh (Iran/US), @adeliiacomposer (Uzbekistan), @wanglu.composer (China), @clariceassad (Brazil), and Aleksandra Vrebalov (Serbia). WE REFUSE to let finances determine who gets to perform this music. Our Fellows come from around the world to live, rehearse, and create together in New York. Though it costs nearly $5,000 to support each Fellow, artists pay only what they can afford, often nothing at all. RIGHT NOW, we urgently need support to close the funding gap for our 2026 class. If you believe bold new voices belong in the future of American music, please consider making a donation. Our 2026 season officially opens up with a bang on June 5th. Returning to PS21 for the fourth year in a row, Peter Askim (@peteraskim ) and the Next Festival of Emerging Artists (@next_fest ) bring vitality and spark to our campus and community during their week-long residency. The festival is headlined by Grammy-nominated Spanish-American cellist and composer Andrea Casarrubios (@andrea_casarrubios ) premiering her brand new double concerto for cello, percussion, and strings – a not-to-be-missed performance. Year after year, Next Fest brings riveting new music to our stage, but this year we feel especially moved by the program highlighting new works by all immigrant women: Iranian-American Niloufar Nourbakhsh, Adeliia Faizullina (Uzbekistan), Wang Lu (China), Clarice Assad (Brazil) and Aleksandra Vrebalov (Serbia). We can’t wait to be back under the pavilion. This one sold out last year, so grab your tickets today! Photo by @sjtaylor0974

She’s one of the most sought-after voices in string music right now, and she’s coming to Next Fest. @the_strad_ just spotlighted @andrea_casarrubios , tracing her rise from world-class cellist to a composer whose music is now performed globally and programmed by major orchestras. Her work is raw, intimate, and deeply human, music she describes as a way to “process everything… to transform, grow, and release.” Read on at thestrad.com And this June, experience it live with us. 👀 Festival announcement coming soon.
