Shark nets & drumlines: ineffective for beach safety, deadly to wildlifeđŹđ˘đłđŚ Advocating for non-lethal alternatives #NetsOutNow
đQLD and NSW,Australia
How long do we have to wait for the nets to be removed from our coastline during Whale Season?
We had the 13th entanglement in 2 weeks, but we all prefer to see joy rather than the scenes that have happened lately.
Itâs not rocket science to see what they are causingâthese moments should be about awe, not anguish.
This is what we want for our coast: an adult whale having an absolute spectacular time, wild and free.
Letâs protect what makes our coastline special. The time for change is now.

Grab your board and make your voice heard â this Saturday, ocean lovers are paddling out to call for an end to deadly shark nets in NSW waters.
This paddle out protest is being organised by @australiangreens and @nswgreens and weâre encouraging everyone who supports the Nets Out Now movement to show up and stand in solidarity. Your presence matters. Together, we can send a clear message: itâs time to modernise shark safety and protect marine life. #netsoutnow
đ¨TOMORROW!
The NSW government is currently debating whether to return shark nets to NSW beaches. A decision could be made as early as next week, so we are asking you to help our voices be heard: itâs time to keep shark nets out for good!
âźď¸WHAT TO DO:
1ď¸âŁ Call the list of MPs below, or just one if you donât have time to call them all.
â Phone calls are the most effective way to get their attention. We have suggested a script below:
âHello, thank you for taking my call. My name is _________, and I would like to speak with you about the shark nets used in New South Wales. They kill marine life without providing any benefit to public safety, and I urge you to immediately end the program in its entirety. Thank you.â
Together, our voices have power. Letâs make sure they hear us before itâs too late.
âď¸MPâs to call:
Premier Chris Minns office - (02) 9228 5555
Deputy Premier: Prue Car (02) 9833 1122
Daniel Mookhey: (02) 7225 6040
Minister for Agriculture, Tara Moriarty - (02) 7225 6120
Minister Michael Daley - (02) 9349 6440
Minister David Harris - (02) 4352 2711
Minister Paul Scully - (02) 4226 5700
Minister Ryan Park - (02) 4285 1588
âźď¸Find more details via the Facebook event link in our bio.
Together we can push for change. Letâs end shark culling. There are non-lethal solutions that work.
Email, call, share and tag decision-makers listed in the carousel. You can help make a difference.

If ever a single image has summed up the ineffectiveness of shark nets, this might be it!
GPS drone sighting data from Randwick Council has been overlayed with the Shark Net position at Maroubra, and now we can see extremely clearly, that shark nets do not work.
The most dangerous myth about shark nets is that they keep sharks away from the beaches, or provide beachgoers with protection.
They are a placebo, and this illustrates it. A placebo with horrific side effects. They must be removed, forever.
BREAKING NEWS In a backwards move the QLD government has announced today expansion of shark nets and drumlines.
Shark nets donât protect people, but kill marine animals and devastate ecosystems.
At a time when the protection of oceans is a priority, @david_crisafulli has chosen to expand a program that has no scientific backing, going against the advice of his own scientific committee and for what? For Votes?
đŚ Shark nets donât keep swimmers safe - but they do kill hundreds of marine animals every year.
Despite what many people think, these nets arenât protective barriers. Theyâre outdated fishing gear, designed to catch and kill, and studies show they do nothing to reduce the risk of shark bites.
Itâs time NSW moved to smarter, safer solutions that protect both people and wildlife.
đ We've made it easy to speak up: Use the link in our bio to personalise and send a pre-written letter to your local MP calling for the permanent removal of shark nets.
đ Want to make an even bigger impact? A quick, respectful email or phone call to your local MP or the Premier's office can go a long way. MPs are more likely to act when they hear from people in their electorate.
Letâs build a safer future for everyone in the ocean - one thatâs backed by science, not fear.

94% NON TARGET SPECIES CAUGHT
36% RELEASED ALIVE
NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE THE NETS WORK
The report from the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee on the shark meshing program is in. It is damning and highlights that there is no place for shark nets.
It includes:
'the TSSC considers that the continued poor outcomes of the annual shark meshing program reflect a wider state government failing for biodiversity conservation in NSW...'
'We note a continued large number of non-target species killed and we have serious concerns that even those released alive have diminished survival capacity''
255 animals were reported entangled in the nets during the period from 1 September 2023 to 30 April 2024. 94% WERE NON TARGET SPECIES!
See the image for the list of animals caught including turtles, endangered and protected grey nurse sharks, dolphins and whalesÂ
Only 36% of the animals caught in the nets were released alive. The others experienced an agonising drowning death after fighting for their life whilst entangled.

đ¨ NSW DIRECT ACTION ALERT - READ CAPTION đ¨
Next week @randwickcouncil will decide their current position on shark nets. In 2021, they already opposed shark nets. In 2023, Sydney Coastal Councils (of which they are a member) already opposed shark nets.
Please politely support all the Randwick councillors, tagged here, to reaffirm this position against shark nets (in favour of modern alternatives) once more.

For those that really like to nerd out on the legalities of shark nets, youâll see that the 2023 letter from Sydney Coastal Councils mentions the Joint Management Agreement (JMA) review in tiles 1-3. The program cannot legally operate without a valid JMA.
This JMA review was eventually done, albeit very overdue, and the JMA was rolled over without any changes or any public consultation, BUT this rollover appears to have been done in the absence of critical scientific information.
The Threatened Species Scientific Committee is required by law to provide advice on the program to the minister each year, and publish this advice publicly.
Leading up to the JMA rollover, this had failed to occur for the three previous years (see tile 5, which is DCCEEW admitting to this). As such, it is entirely possible that the Minister had no current scientific advice before them, at the time the JMA was rolled over.
This is yet another reason to oppose the program⌠DPI/DCCEEW canât even follow their own rules on publishing TSSC scientific advice. The rollover that allowed the JMA (and thus the program) to continue, happened behind closed doors and is highly questionable.
