Weeks posts
One voice. Hundreds of millions of people. A demonstrable shift in how the world relates to the natural world. This week on the Envoy Journal, we’ve been reflecting on what his century has actually meant for animals, ecosystems, and the climate conversation, and why his model of storytelling still feels like the right one. #DavidAttenborough #Conservation #ClimateAction

We are taught to fear sharks. But every year, humans kill an estimated 70-100 million of them. For fins. For liver oil used in cosmetics and supplements. Even for their teeth. Some shark populations have declined by about 70% in just a few decades. If you want to take a stand and learn more, please visit https://www.envoy.foundation/projects/envoy-shark-cull for more information. I went diving with tiger sharks in the Maldives...on my first ever dive. And honestly, I was half expecting JAWS... But underwater, the story felt very different. Sharks have existed for over 400 million years - long before dinosaurs - yet we often see them through a lens of fear. The reality is - only 5 to 10 people die from shark attacks each year. Human though, kill an estimated 100 million sharks annually. Full story on YouTube. Link in Bio. #sharks #maldives #sharkattack #savethesharks #oceanconservation

I came to the Maldives terrified of sharks. Blame Jaws. And headlines of shark attacks. Then I jumped into the water with tiger sharks, and something doesn't add up. They weren't hunting us. In fact, they seemed...curious. Calm even. That's when my dive instructor told me about Ema, his favourite shark. Which raises a bigger question. Are sharks misunderstood? Because while sharks kill 5-10 people a year globally, humans kill an estimated 100 million sharks annually. And now...Ema has disappeared. We did the math, and the results are staggering. Envoy Foundation conducted a forensic analysis of the Queensland Shark Control Program (QSCP), comparing their actions against the modernisation roadmap provided by KPMG. The verdict? The roadmap has been 97% ignored. While the world moves toward 21st-century, non-lethal technology to keep beaches safe, the QSCP is stuck in the past, favoring outdated methods over the expert-led path to modernisation. We aren’t just calling for change; we’re calling for accountability. #EnvoyFoundation #SharkControl #MarineConservation #thisisqueensland

We talk a lot about the health of the planet, but we don’t always talk about our own internal ecosystem. Between the air we breathe and the products we use, our bodies are constantly processing the realities of modern life. Our latest post looks at how we can better navigate these daily exposures and make choices that support our long-term health.

95% of sharks are already behind the nets. New drone data from Queensland reveals: Over 95% of target sharks were detected on the beach side of shark nets. At Burleigh Beach, 100% of sightings occurred in the swimmer zone. The evidence is clear: sharks routinely bypass nets, rendering them ineffective. Drones are now proven to provide the real-time detection that lethal equipment cannot. Full report at envoy.foundation/news.

The US just hit the ā€œundoā€ button on 16 years of climate policy. On Feb 12, 2026, the EPA rescinded the landmark Endangerment Finding. This means the federal mandate to report and regulate greenhouse gases has effectively vanished. But here’s the catch: The rest of the world isn’t following suit. The future of conservation is complex. The 2026 Horizon Scan reveals 15 critical emerging issues, from the revolutionary potential of new AI (TinyML) to the alarming realities of global soil drying and mass plastic pollution from drone cables. It’s a wake-up call to prepare for next-decade challenges: spanning deep-sea mining, financial innovation like the TFFF, and the biosecurity risks of engineered ā€˜mirror life.’ Read the article to understand the full scope of what’s coming.

LIVING WITH SHARKS Thrilled to share that my latest feature on shark nets has just been published in Australian Geographic and is now hitting shelves across the country 🦈 This piece was a true collaboration, and I want to extend a huge thank you to the incredible scientists, conservationists, shark bite survivors, and photographers (listed below) who so generously shared their time, expertise, lived experience and powerful imagery. Your voices are what give this issue depth, humanity and urgency. @envoyfilm @envoyfoundation @andreborell @charliehuveneers Dr Leonardo Guida, Lawrence Chlebeck @humaneworldaustralia Professor Chris Pepin-Neff @hollyrichmond_ @shaun__petersen @sharksafebarrier and Dave Pearson A massive thanks as well to the team at @australiangeographic for shining a national spotlight on this complex and emotive issue. It is heartening to see shark nets getting the attention they deserve, and I truly hope this contributes to informed discussion and meaningful action toward safer, science-based alternatives that ultimately result in removal of the nets. Living with sharks is not about fear. It is about coexistence, evidence, and better solutions for both people and ocean life. šŸ“ø And if you spot it on the shelves, send me a pic. #netsoutnow #sharks #scicomm

Our latest guest, @andreborell never set out to become a shark conservationist, but after learning the truth about shark nets and drumlines, it lit a fire he couldn’t ignore. šŸ”„ At the time, Andre was running a video production company, creating corporate content. He says taking on an investigative documentary felt like an easy project. Overconfident? Maybe. NaĆÆve? Definitely. Against the odds, he pulled it off, creating a powerful documentary about Australia’s shark control programs, featuring global voices like @pauldegelder @oceanramsey @sharkgirlmadison What surprised him most wasn’t the documentary’s success, but the generosity of the shark conservation community. 🦈🩵 Once an outsider, Andre says the film only succeeded because of collective effort and now, he feels like one of them. šŸŽ¬ Watch Envoy: Shark Cull on Netflix šŸŽ§ Hear the full story in episode 41 #VeganPodcast #VeganCommunity #SharkConservation
