CVG UPCOMING TALK 🌋 Monday 11th May - 1pm Tilley Lecture theatre Frankie Haywood, PhD student at University of Bristol @uobearthsciences Frankie Haywood is a 4th Year PhD researcher in experimental petrology and Volcanology at the School of Earth Sciences university of Bristol. She will be talking about pantellerite eruptions - talk title “Pantellerite eruptions are extremely susceptible to sintering and cryptic fragmentation” Authors: Frankie Haywood, Richard Brooker, Fabian Wadsworth, Alison Rust, Geoff Kilgour, Ed Llewellin Abstract: Pantellerite eruption deposits display histories of repeated explosive-effusive eruption transitions with no apparent change in magma characteristics. Across the varied eruption styles, the peralkaline rhyolite deposits have high pre-eruptive water contents and low crystal contents; as such, the control behind these transitions remains unexplained. In this work, we present new field, textural and experimental data from Tūhua (New Zealand) to propose that all pantellerite eruptions are fed by explosive volcanism. Subsequently, dense, lava-like pantellerite deposits are produced through thorough post-depositional sintering or syn-eruption cryptic fragmentation of these lower-viscosity rhyolites. We also provide evidence that oxidation could influence the behaviour of these iron-rich melts, and explore how this could affect eruption behaviours. #volcanology #volcano #research #cambridge

🧵 The Business of Repair Mini-project examined how clothing repair can be scaled within the UK fashion system through qualitative research with brands, repair specialists and consumers. 🪡 The findings show that repair can drive circularity and brand value when supported by coordinated action across design, operations, policy and engagement. 👉 See our 3-minute summary here: /projects/the-business-of-repair-evidence-backed-strategies-for-circular-fashion/

🚢 Ships on the move! 👀   We welcomed RRS Discovery home to Southampton this morning, after a successful refit in Falmouth with A&P Falmouth, to begin mobilising for the next Porcupine Abyssal Plain voyage. 🇬🇧   Meanwhile on the other side of the Atlantic RRS James Cook arrived into Halifax Harbour yesterday morning ahead of work with @fisheriesoceanscan 🇨🇦   Spanning ocean basins, research vessels underpin ocean science allowing us to collect data that help us understand the complex nature of our oceans.   Have you spotted our Royal Research Ships in the wild? 👀   @nercscience #RRSJamesCook #RRSDiscovery #RoyalResearchShip

❓ Can biotic textiles really deliver sustainability benefits in everyday wear? Our research with UK sportswear users shows that while odour control appeals, environmental gains depend on whether laundering habits actually change. You can read about🍄‍🟫 & 🏡 Spores & Chores, one of our mini‑projects that reflects the Future Fibres Network Plus’ key objectives of: 1️⃣aligning design and environmental science, 2️⃣ embedding circular principles, and 3️⃣driving skills innovation. 👉 See our 3-minute summary here: /projects/spores-and-chores-consumer-perceptions-of-biotic-textiles/

This week two UK Chief Scientific Advisors visited Svalbard to see first-hand how the UK is working on arctic science, on the front line of climate change ❄ With the Arctic warming 3–4x faster than the global average (and even more in Svalbard), UK researchers are building on our strong tradition of polar research and working closely with partners in Ny‑Ålesund and Longyearbyen on everything from snowfall sensors to glacier greenhouse‑gas monitoring 🌍 An inspiring reminder of why international science collaboration matters 🤝

Today is International Day of Women and Girls in science and an opportunity for me to highlight just a few of the incredible women I've had the honour of working with during my times at sea. Without them, and countless others like them, we wouldn't be answering the questions or making the scientific discoveries we continue to make. These women ensure that every young girl and woman can see scientific progress being made by someone who looks just like them. They are role models and sources of inspiration and I’m grateful to each and every one. To any woman who wonders if marine science is for you, take my word for it - it absolutely is. #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience #IDWGS #IDWGS26 #womeninstem #womeninscience
