Our Planet. Decoded.
UKCEH makes sense of environmental complexity to power decisions that shape a better future. By studying the complex relationship between people and the natural world, we equip leaders, communities and scientists with the evidence to drive lasting, positive change â supporting a productive, resilient and healthy environment where society and nature can progress together.
We donât just examine our planet, we decode it â working out how to build a better tomorrow.
We've grown into a pioneering multinational team, and our refreshed identity reflects who we have become, with new ideas, services and opportunities.

A lot goes on beneath the surface of lakes. @adventureswithamina spent the day with us at Windermere to learn more. Weâve been collecting data here for 80 years, and itâs showing that the lake is getting warmer - impacting water quality, wildlife, and the frequency of algal blooms.
Most of this isnât visible to us, but thatâs kind of the point - consistent monitoring is what helps uncover whatâs really changing.
If youâre around lakes or rivers, you can actually contribute too.
We have a free app called Bloominâ Algae â where, if you spot something that looks like a bloom, you upload it and itâll be checked/verified by experts. Itâs one Amina will now be using!

Ever spotted âstuffâ in the water just as youâre about to swim? Not sure if it's safe? Or who to ask?
In warmer weather, toxic blooms of Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can appear in lakes and rivers across the UK.
So, @caldamac visited Windermere with @UKCEH to understand how we monitor the lake (weâve been at it for 80 years) and see how our app, Bloominâ Algae, works for reporting unusual sightings in the water.
If you see a suspected bloom, report it on the app to help protect people and wildlife. @caldamac will be.

Whatâs hidden beneath the surface of Windermere? đŠ
With scientists from UKCEH, we dive into 80 years of data showing how the lake is warming - with real consequences for algal blooms, wildlife, and people.
Now you can help.
Spot something unusual in waters near you? Report it with the Bloominâ Algae app and help support real-time science that keeps people and pets safe.
