Let’s make an Americano. Though it came to be upstaged by the global popularity of its younger sibling, the Negroni, the Americano cocktail still holds its own in the history books, and at the bar. The creation of Gaspare Campari at his bar in Milan in the mid-19th century, the drink was a twist on his Milano-Torino cocktail—an equal mix of Campari and sweet vermouth. When the Milano-Torino received an effervescent splash of soda water, the result was an easy-drinking spritz that was reportedly very popular among American tourists. It would be another half-century before the Negroni (which bolsters the mixture by swapping the soda for gin) was even invented. 📸 @twistandtailor

“The Boulevardier started as a magazine inspired by a lifestyle, and detoured into a cocktail that was forgotten for decades before finding new life in the 21st century,” writes @MrPatrickDooley . “And finally, this fall, it’s coming full circle, with The @BoulevardierMagazine Anniversary Edition.” Head to the link in our bio to read more about Patrick’s journey as an American bartender at @harrysbar_theoriginal in Paris finding inspiration to reimagine a long-forgotten piece of cultural history. 🎨 @mattynewtonillustration

Let’s make a Boulevardier! With Bourbon Heritage Month and Negroni Week coinciding, there’s no better time to enjoy this classic Negroni relative, which simply subs in bourbon for gin. The cocktail traces its roots to Erskine Gwynne, an American socialite with Vanderbilt ties. As was de rigueur during the early 20th century, Gwynne expatriated to Paris, where he founded the literary magazine Boulevardier, described in an early advertisement as best “read before, between and after cocktails.” (More on this later…) The cocktail must have followed shortly after; it’s first detailed in Scottish bartender Harry McElhone’s 1927 recipe collection, Bar Flies and Cocktails, and credited to Gwynne and the drink’s kinship to the Negroni could have served to boost its recent renaissance. 📹 @twistandtailor

Once upon a time, not all that long ago, the Negroni was more of a notion than a reality. Outside of its Italian home base, the Negroni existed more in books and old newspapers than it did in glasses sliding across bar tops. But over the past 15 years or so, the Negroni has mounted one of the most successful comebacks in cocktail history, spawning an endless stream of inspired riffs, along with the global celebration of Negroni Week. As the cocktail’s fortunes have risen, so have the number of bars worldwide that hold the Negroni and its many relatives in high esteem. Head to the link in our bio for a brief tour of some of our favorite bars around the world for sipping Negronis and living the aperitivo lifestyle. 📸 @conte_sydney by @nshot.creative

Two of our favorite Negroni variations are the Chocolate Negroni and the Strawberry Negroni, and in this best of both worlds recipe, @barlaprovidencia merges the two, combining gin with strawberry-infused Campari and cacao-infused vermouth. Recipe link in our bio.🍓 📸 @grimpet

At its heart, Negroni Week is about coming together as a global community to celebrate and support a great cause, which since 2022 has been @SlowFood_International ’s mission to foster a more sustainable and equitable world of food and beverage. To bolster that effort, Slow Food created the Slow Food Negroni Week Fund, which provides hospitality-focused scholarships and grants around the world. Today on Radio Imbibe, we explore the Negroni Week Fund’s impact with Bilal Sarwari, international councilor for Slow Food; @SlowDrinks author Danny Childs; and @HanselMorales , a bartender and manager at @SitiATX and a recipient of a 2024 scholarship. Tune in via the link in our bio or whoever you get podcast.

Like falling back into step with a longtime acquaintance, the Old Pal cocktail hits the mark with a nostalgic combination of flavors. Credited to barman Harry MacElhone of Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, the 1920s cocktail is essentially a riff on a riff. Evolving from the classic Negroni into the Boulevardier—also one of MacElhone’s, which swaps the gin for bourbon—the Old Pal specifies rye whiskey and replaces the sweet vermouth with dry, creating a leaner, spicier profile. Like many classic cocktails that have evolved to appease a modern palate, the Old Pal (historically equal parts) is now more often poured with a 2:1:1 ratio. Recipe link in our bio. 📸 @johnvalls_f2.0
