🏥 Optical illusion, or interconnected hospital campus?
Set within a steep, wooded site, the new Vista Pavilion at Oregon Health & Science University turns complexity into opportunity, linking new and existing facilities into a seamless system of care.
Entries at multiple levels simplifies arrival for patients, staff and visitors navigating the challenging terrain. Three elevated pedestrian bridges connect the new tower to the existing hospital and Kohler Pavilion, integrating clinical flows and enabling continuous movement across the campus.
Rather than working around the site, the design uses it—creating a network that improves access, strengthens connections and makes a large, complex medical campus feel intuitive.

🔊 “Alaska Airline’s culture is rooted in safety and training. And as their global training center, the building needed to reflect that in every space. We brought hospitality into a training environment—creating spaces where people feel comfortable, supported and ready to learn.” - Justin Cochran, Project Designer, NBBJ
At @alaskaair ’s global training center in Seattle, a 1990s office building is transformed into a modern hub—where smart design supports everything from pilot simulators and mock boarding gates to uniform styling and cafe spaces. Organized around the idea of navigation, the three-wing layout is broken down into intuitive pathways and destinations.
The building also features an extensive adaptive reuse story:
♻️ 100% reused: structure, vertical circulation + lighting infrastructure
♻️ 65% reused: mechanical systems + ductwork
♻️ 60% reused: walls
♻️ 110,000 SF reused: carpet
♻️ 140,000 SF reused: ceiling tile
New materials are used where they matter most, while existing systems and finishes are refreshed and replaced. The result is a flexible, future-ready environment that can evolve alongside Alaska’s fleet and workforce.

🌍 This #EarthDay, we’re celebrating what we didn’t build.
At NBBJ, sustainable design is an opportunity—whether creating new, high-performance buildings or transforming existing ones. Across our work, we’re reducing energy use and environmental impact in many ways. And sometimes, the most powerful move is to look at what already exists and ask it to do more.
♻️ Here’s what reuse looks like in practice:
21 E State Street | Columbus, OH: A historic building revitalized into a modern workplace—preserving character and structure while upgrading performance, extending its life for decades to come.
—
@alaskaair Global Training Center | Seattle, WA: A 1990s office building transformed into a modern training hub—reusing structure, systems and finishes at scale to reduce waste and focus investment where it matters most.
—
680 Folsom | San Francisco, CA: A landmark office building reimagined through a resource-conscious renovation—retaining key materials like granite flooring while introducing targeted upgrades that elevate the tenant experience.
—
Two Union Square | Seattle, WA: A repositioning of an iconic office tower—introducing new public spaces and amenities while maximizing the value of the existing building.
—
@ucsfhealth Connie Frank Transplant Center | San Francisco, CA: By leveraging existing architectural features and standardizing design elements, the project achieved 25% cost savings while creating a high-performance clinical environment.
—
640 Memorial Drive | Cambridge, MA: An existing building repositioned for the future—leveraging its core structure while introducing flexible, high-performance workspace designed to adapt over time.

Innovation only matters when it solves pressing challenges for our clients—like reducing energy costs while maintaining comfortable, healthy buildings.
That’s why @fastcompany has named NBBJ one of the world’s most innovative architecture firms—for a record-setting sixth time! 🏆
This year, we’re recognized for our decade-plus research partnership with NBBJ Fellow Dr. John Medina, exploring design strategies that reduce energy use while keeping buildings and people cool—a win-win.
Medina’s research shows that every 4°F increase above 72°F reduces focus, memory, and learning by 10%—a critical insight as heatwaves now last 20% longer and occur 67% more often than in 1979. Paired with low-cost, high-impact design strategies, this work has informed more than 40 million square feet of our projects.
This recognition reinforces a simple idea: the innovations that matter most are the ones that help our clients succeed.

We’re excited to see 680 Folsom Street featured in @interiordesignmag ’s roundup of “Global Hotspots Leading with Sustainable Design,” spotlighting projects that combine environmental responsibility with powerful storytelling.
Originally constructed in 1964 for Pacific Bell, the landmark building’s lobby and event space are reimagined to connect people to San Francisco’s natural character. Repurposed granite flooring grounds the space, while lush plantings and warm, earth-toned furnishings create a welcoming environment that brings nature indoors.
Above, a series of dramatic ceiling installations—composed of two-tone anodized aluminum chains—cascade through the space, their forms inspired by the movement of the city’s coastal fog. The result is a workplace environment where sustainability and narrative come together to shape how people experience the building.

🌆What if the workplace didn’t just occupy the city—but helped shape how people experience it?
Defining the skyline at Tencent Net City, the P4 Towers mark a new gateway into one of Shenzhen’s most ambitious urban districts—where workplace, landscape and city life move as one.
The towers step across the site to frame views of Dachanwan Bay, guide movement through the campus and create a dynamic silhouette on the skyline. Above, rooftop sky gardens turn workspaces into outdoor destinations. Below, a shared commons connects people to nature, culture and each other.
Together, the P4 Towers advance Net City’s vision for a functional, human-centered environment—where architecture organizes the city while creating meaningful experiences for the people who use it every day.

What happens when infrastructure becomes public space?
That’s the case at MXD Plaza in Cambridge, MA, where NBBJ—working with @bxp_inc , @stantec and @sasakidesign —shapes the architectural expression for three structures at the heart of a mixed-use district of offices, labs, residences and retail.
The twist? Beneath the plaza sits a seven-story-deep transformer substation that must surface for access, ventilation and future maintenance. Rather than conceal it, the design embraces and expresses this essential infrastructure—turning what could be an obstacle into an asset of the public realm.
Through seating, tactile natural materials and forms that reflect the surrounding context, the infrastructure actively supports everyday use—adding character, comfort and vitality to the plaza.

We’re excited to share new imagery of the @vivo_global Headquarters in Shenzhen, China—a workplace designed to balance innovation with comfort, efficiency with openness, and performance with well-being.
Located in a newly developing district, the building serves as smartphone manufacturer vivo’s global home base: a highly efficient, brand-forward workplace that still feels calm and connected to nature. The design reflects how tech companies work today—collaborative, flexible and people-focused.
Each floor is shaped to create a gentle, upward rhythm of indoor gathering spaces and outdoor terraces, making it easier for teams to move, meet and connect across departments. Landscaped areas throughout the building bring nature inside, offering places to pause and recharge during the day. Operable windows allow employees to control their own environment, while a high-performance facade and generous glazing bring in daylight and views toward Qianhai Bay.
The result is a workplace that feels open without being on display—supporting collaboration, creativity and a healthier way of working.

How can dense urban cities evolve into places that are more livable, connected and green? Our team explores that challenge through a forward-looking mixed-use concept designed to bring nature into the heart of Singapore.
This vision reimagines vertical urban living by stacking workplace, hospitality, wellness, childcare, food and beverage, and public amenities into a single ecosystem. Rather than concentrating activity only at the street, the project extends public experiences upward—introducing terraces, gardens and communal spaces that function as a "vertical park."
Using advanced environmental modeling, the exterior is designed to reduce heat, boost comfort and maximize views. At street level, everyday essentials—from retail to childcare—make daily needs easily accessible. Higher up, shared spaces and terraces offer spots to relax, connect, or enjoy fresh air and views, while elevated wellness and dining areas form a striking crown on the skyline.
This concept demonstrates how future developments in dense districts can deliver more than floor area—they can bring daylight, greenery, social space and balance back into the urban experience.
