I’ve wanted to create this picture for a long time.
Sara Ruddick calls it “preservative love”—the invisible labor of keeping life alive in a world that doesn’t protect the innocent.
We feed, we soothe, we love. We see the faces of all children in the face of our own.
We put on a pantomime, as a shield between a heart wide open, and our pain—our rage of carrying the weight of a broken world.
This is for all the mothers, and those mothering, soft, fierce and relentless. Particularly the ones doing it without proper support.
“Mothers are not passive victims of a violent world; they are active agents who resist violence by preserving, fostering, and socializing life in the face of it.”
—Sara Ruddick.
