Ya girl is 30, chile! Wow, wow, wow. There is no cute or tidy way to sum up my 20s. They were a bounty of experiences. Electrifying, heartbreaking, and illuminating. I evolved in ways I never could have imagined, and every version of myself served a purpose, guiding me to where I am today. I began my 20s by moving to NYC alone, running headfirst toward my dream of becoming an actor. Ten years later, I am still here, and I am a working actor. My inner child is grinning because she knew her belief in herself would set ablaze a path to wherever she wanted to go. I have been harnessing that little girl’s bravery ever since. The journey has not been easy, but maybe that’s the point? Ease can be a threat to growth. I am grateful for every lesson and every season that stretched me. In particular, this last year has taught me to be content with exactly where my feet are. God has truly blessed me. This is a significant step forward for a more inclusive online shopping experience. This campaign is deeply personal to me. I played the warm, fiery, gossip-loving owner of a Louisiana beauty salon, Truvy Jones. She taught me a valuable lesson: laughter through tears is the best medicine! I’m so lucky to have found my passion early in life and I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve had to perform on stage. …And no, I will not be addressing the wigs, makeup, or my mohawk. MARIANNE ANGELLE, you formidable, sharp-tongued, courageous soldier for peace, and badass revolutionary! What an honor it was to embody your essence for seven weeks. Though you are the only fictional character in this play, your story rings so true. Marianne represents the countless indomitable free and enslaved Haitian women who led the charge for a free Haiti, then known as Saint-Domingue, among them are Cécile Fatiman, Lieutenant Suzanne “Sanité” Bélair, and Victoria Montou. In the play, when Marianne has to bellow the poignant line, “Nobody writes me down,” a lump would form in my throat each time. Throughout history, Black women across the diaspora have played vital roles in human rights movements, yet their names and faces have been relegated to the shadows. This is why we must speak their names, tell their stories loudly and proudly, and remind the world that they were trailblazers. May their memories be a blessing to us all and serve as a reminder that the fight for justice and the betterment of humanity is never-ending. And in this moment, when the very existence of the most vulnerable minorities is being erased in this country, the call to action is more urgent than ever.
