Realized after doing my sobering and needed count. last year I did over 40 features/speaking engagements. Thats excluding my own programing. An additional 20 or so open mics (mostly to give back support). Quite literally performed 2-3 times a day on a few occasions. I had a ball. My nervous system did not. I still showed up with everything on and off stage... Felt familiar. Still catching back up to myself and beyond. Will only be saying yes to soul aligned features and genuine (I feel like testing out this one) open mic moments. I love meeting people blind and them doing the same. No proof necessary. All heart all the time. Push always. No complaining. While I mostly walk lone ninja... I can assure you I am never truly alone... Love is still real. So is the wisdom. 💜 It is well... My encounters with Black History, and my personal history is what I've been nostalgic on. Through poetry and activism, I've found myself around leaders, teachers, pillars, people thorough for more than a dollar/look. I honor them today. And a girl who knew there had to be an alternative route that didn't cost your soul/integrity... The moments I heard stories biopic worthy right from the sources. I dont have enough photos for all. But I have gratitude and a heart that's assured/warmed... So this BHM was interesting. I found myself considering juxtaposed positions/demeanors. A thought that's hounded me for years... How they convinced us to spread their thoughts about us to us. How "each one teach one" became "keep your foot on these n****s necks!" For an oppressor or exploiter. Eh. Not opposed. Idc what either looks like... (That may be useful. *notes) Still, how did we let them twist the plot in their favor to the point where some of us sound and operate like overseers and exploiters to our own. Not just with a line. But how we operate and what we honor/respect. They don't even have to get to us first now my ni***? Hmm. It can't all be money and tax write offs disguised as "giving back." It can't all be materialism and treating integrity like an afterthought. You won't convince me actualization requires partiality, opportunist ideals, and selfcentered morals (capitalism). I dont believe it's protecting predators or enabling maltreatment according to bank accounts/status. Nor is it a lack of accountability to those you wrong or impact in harmful (sometimes life altering) ways in your personal walk. So. What's your Black History? You exclusively. The real one. When rumors or praise, positive or negative words, truth, facts, lies, assumptions, and preconceived whatevers from others fall away. What will your creator say of your Black History? When it's you and him? I hope it's love. I hope it's beautiful. I hope you stood tall when it wasn't for gain. On and off stage. (a metaphor.) Because, life is real. Peace.✌🏾 S/o to Yah... If you can be honest about your lows you can be just as honest about how amazing it is to keep everything up while walking a tight rope of opinions that exhault themselves above God and even the science they claim. Care for some is complicated. What a joy it is to be created by a God that prepared you to handle it and brought you to every place you needed... SN: Your unwillingness to be known, seen, or accept the titles you never asked for... Might be the main thing keeping you in danger and as an easy target... Somehow it still doesn't and never mattered what others call me. I just know since a kid there's been a consensus. Is what it is.... Even since last year collaborating with legendary Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. @officialchairmanfredhamptonjr and so many others Nahla Gem has been doing the work that most are too afraid to even cross. With that being said her organizing is only one of the few things that she’s amazing at, one of the other great things is her artistry. There’s a certain kind of spoken word that doesn’t perform for applause, it performs for truth.. On “A Moment Mr Jackson”, Nahla Gem delivers a piece that feels less like a staged recital and more like a private reckoning made public. From the opening breath, her voice carries intention. Not just in the words themselves, but in the weight she assigns to each one. She doesn’t rush. She allows space, space for thought, space for tension, space for the listener to catch up emotionally. It creates an atmosphere where you’re not just hearing her, you’re sitting with her. What makes “A Moment Mr Jackson” land is it’s emotional precision. Nahla Gem moves between vulnerability and conviction with control. There are moments where her tone feels almost hushed, like she’s speaking directly to a memory or a person who may or may not still be present.
