The Music Thing Workshop System is a complete modular synth that’s smaller than a hardback book. See it and say hello at @machinabristronica , or find out more at musicthing.co.uk, join the waitlist at @thonksynth #musicthingmodular #synthdiy
Beautiful meditative performance by Brian Crabtree of monome. The grid is running meadowphysics, a touch-to-midi system, and connected to the Workshop Computer for power + data over USB, with the Reverb+ card by @chris.johnson074 acting as midi host (and reverb). @dessertplanet_ is responsible for helping monome make friends with WS - this stuff makes me inordinately proud and excited.
UPDATE: the code is now at https://chat-card.incomputable.io/
I couldn’t wait to share this incredible demo from @chicoe , using code from @chris.johnson074 - the USB keyboard is controlling a speech synthesis program card. The Workshop Computer is a tiny hackable audio computer than can make sounds, effects and connect to things with USB.
I built a @musicthingmodular Workshop Computer last night in order to act as a customizable midi host for the iii scripts I’ve been tinkering with. So now, all I have to do is plug the grid in to the Workshop Computer and I’ve got an entirely customizable Ansible-like experience.
This is a physics-based pong kind of a thing that I’ve been tinkering with. Still kind of buggy, but fun. Can confirm that drawing a cat paw makes a bop.
From Theodore Gordon’s excellent book The Composer’s Black Box. I’ve been thinking a lot about musicians and non-musicians after watching, listening and talking to people using the Workshop System for the first time. Often it’s their first exposure to modular synths, sometimes the first time they’ve made music since primary school.

Make an Album in One Week with Graphic Scores on Toronto Island.
This album was created during the @dyski.co Sound Maps residency at @gibraltarpointto , Toronto Island, 2 to 6 March 2026.
A simple computer script generated graphic scores, track names, and coded instructions. Participants interpreted these scores freely, responding to the island environment. Sound sources include the @musicthingmodular Workshop System, a portable modular synthesiser, and the diverse sonic environment of the island itself.
The album will be available on Bandcamp on Wednesday 15 April 2026.
Join us for a live listening party on Wednesday 15 April at 9pm GMT and 4pm EDT.

Each of these events started with an email or a DM or a chat. Dozens of people have put in huge amounts of work to make them happen, finding spaces, budgets, permissions and people to attend. I’m incredibly grateful to all of you, and to the people who come along - it’s such a strange and wonderful privilege to see you make amazing music with this weird little box. If you have an idea for a Workshop System event, DM me or email: [email protected]
Here we have more patches from the @musicthingmodular Workshop Computer module.
There's a whole host of community created cards to turn the old school computer inspired module into a range of characterful FX and CV generators & modulators.
Check out the demo on the @divkidvideo YouTube channel and grab a kit from @thonksynth if you fancy it.
