Last summer, in conversations over drinks with théo, I kept circling around misunderstandings and possible rediscoveries of the grotesque—partly because I had begun to realize how often I was compulsively regurgitating certain concepts, almost as if vomiting them out. I wanted to dismantle those ideas and think through them more carefully. As I began inviting friends I wanted to work with and started writing, I tried to press those thoughts into the container of an exhibition. For this show, I intentionally held back my usual, almost obsessive impulse to tie everything tightly to my previous work. Instead, I allowed myself to act more often on intuition and instinct—to take in what immediately caught my eye without resistance, and to work through those impulses directly. Looking back, in a world where almost nothing is not grotesque, the moments when I felt I might understand it were precisely when I listened to my intuition. This was never a project aimed at arriving at a correct answer. It was a field set up to keep asking questions—and one in which I actively hoped to betray myself.
