- l WORKSHOP l 최진석 개인전 《Collective Witchcraft》의 연계 워크숍을 진행합니다. 작가와 함께 전시를 관람한 후, 콤플렉스 4층 세라믹 스튜디오에서 <Between Our Palms>를 만듭니다. <Between Our Palms>(2021-현재)는 나무 톱밥과 에센셜 오일, 글루파우더와 물을 치대어 만든 향 조각입니다. 작업과 전시를 뒤에서 도운 동료 26명의 합장한 손 모양을 본 떠 만든 이 조각은 노동하는 사람의 주 신체 기관인 손을 부각시킴과 동시에, 우리가 미술을 만들고 향유하기 위해 동원하는 숱한 공동 노동의 시간과 수고를 조각적으로 환기합니다. GOBI(Los Angeles), New Museum(New York) 등지에서 전시 및 워크숍의 형태로 소개된 바 있습니다. 워크숍은 5월 22일(금) 오후 4시와 5월 30일(토) 오전 11시, 두 차례에 걸쳐 진행됩니다. 만든 조각은 건조를 거쳐 박스 포장된 후, 픽업해 가실 수 있습니다. 재료와 포장재 구입을 위해 참가비 1만원을 받습니다. 참여를 원하시는 분은 DM 이나 [email protected] 로 문의 주세요! As part of Choi Jinseok’s solo exhibition 《Collective Witchcraft》, we’re hosting a special workshop with the artist. After viewing the exhibition together, participants will create <Between Our Palms> at Klay Source on the 4th floor of Komplex. <Between Our Palms>(2021–present) is a series of scented sculptures made from kneaded wood sawdust, essential oils, glue powder, and water. Cast from the clasped hands of 26 collaborators who supported the work and exhibition behind the scenes, the sculptures highlight the hand as a primary tool of labor while also evoking the many forms of collective work and care involved in making and experiencing art. The workshop will take place twice: – Friday, May 22 at 4 PM – Saturday, May 30 at 11 AM The sculptures will be dried and packaged after the workshop, and participants will be able to pick them up later. - l ON VIEW l 최진석, A Rose In/From/To You, 2026, 참여자가 기증한 조각, 트랜스듀서, 앰프, 벽에 카빙, 사운드(120분), 가변크기 "이번 전시에서 작가는 '소리(sound)'와 직조(weaving)'로 만든 조각을 선보인다. 이 작업들은 작가가 미국에서 비 영주권자로서 겪어 온 정치사회적 압력을 향한 조형적 반응으로, 체류 심사를 대비해 감추거나 삭제해야 했던 SNS 메시지와 온라인 기록물, 그 안에 담겨 있던 대화와 의미, 상징들을 재료로 삼는다. 전시장 입구의 <In Vertigo>와 <Double Movement>, 벽에 균열을 내 설치한 <A Rose In/From/To You>, 평상 형태의 <Run Run>은 트랜스듀서를 가지고 있어, 작가가 작곡가와 함께 만든 사운드를 송출한다. 이 사운드는 삭제한 SNS 대화를 동료와 음성으로 재현한 후 그 녹취를 해체해 의미를 식별할 수 없게 만든 다채널 오디오로, 조각과 벽을 진동하며 전시장에 울려 퍼진다(전시서문 발췌)." - 《Collective Witchcraft》 Jinseok Choi 2026. 5. 8. - l ABOUT ARTIST l 최진석 작가의 개인전 《Collective Witchcraft》가 내일 시작됩니다. 작가는 미술이 수행할 수 있는 사회적 역할의 지평을 탐구해 왔습니다. 재개발 구역 내 철거를 앞둔 주택과 학교를 전시 공간 삼아, 현장에서 획득한 폐 자재로 설치 작업을 전개해 사라질 공간과 사물을 향한 새로운 시각적 접근을 제시하거나, 화이트 큐브 전시장의 벽 내부, 보이지 않는 설비 구조물의 윤곽을 따라 드로잉과 텍스트, 인쇄물을 콜라주 해 미국 산업 발전의 근간임에도 충분히 조명되지 않은 이민자들의 가려진 노동사를 은유했습니다. 목공 작업의 부산물인 자투리 목재와 쓰고 남은 천 조각들로 만든 설치작 <Idleground(2024)>는 사회경제적 계급 간 양극화와 고립을 향한 작가의 조형적 대응으로, 한국의 '평상' 사용 문화를 복기합니다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 소리(sound)와 직조(weaving)를 방법 삼은 최근작들과, 미술로 창출할 수 있는 공동체성을 향한 해석이 담긴 조각, 설치를 선보입니다. 한국에서 가지는 작가의 첫 개인전에 많은 관심과 방문 바랍니다! Jinseok Choi's solo exhibition 《Collective Witchcraft》 opens tomorrow. Through his practice, the artist has continually explored how art can speak about society—bringing visibility to things that are often overlooked, obscured, or left unspoken under the pressure of dominant systems. Using houses and schools awaiting demolition in redevelopment areas as exhibition sites, he has created installations from discarded materials gathered on-site, proposing new ways of approaching disappearing spaces and objects. In another project, he collaged drawings, texts, and printed matter along the hidden outlines of structural facilities concealed behind the white cube gallery walls, alluding to the labor histories of immigrants that supported the growth of American industry yet have rarely been fully acknowledged. Responding sculpturally to widening socioeconomic divides, he revisited the Korean culture of the pyeongsang—a traditional communal wooden platform—and transformed byproducts of woodworking into Idleground (2024), inviting the exhibition itself to function as a platform for gathering and community. - l UPCOMING EXHIBITION l 콤플렉스는 5월 8일부터 30일까지 최진석 작가의 개인전 《Collective Witchcraft》를 개최합니다. The upcoming exhibition 《Collective Witchcraft》 at Komplex will begin on the afternoon of May 8 with a performative act centered on the making of <Between Our Palms (2021–2024)>. <Between Our Palms> is a series of incense sculptures, currently comprising 26 works, made by kneading together wood dust (a byproduct of the artist’s sculptural process), glue powder, essential oils, and water. Each piece takes the form of a pair of clasped hands, cast from the artist’s colleagues who supported the exhibition behind the scenes. By foregrounding the hand—arguably the primary tool of labor—the work gestures toward the often-unspoken efforts that sustain an exhibition, while also giving sensory form to a sense of social interconnectedness, both visually and through scent. Starting from 3 PM on the opening day, May 8, the artist will be working somewhere within Komplex—either on the second floor or in the basement—sculpting the clasped hands of invited colleagues. (전시서문 발췌) Yongkuk works across painting, sculpture, and installation using collected objects and familiar materials from his everyday surroundings. Many of these are secondhand or found by chance—objects without a clear owner. He moves freely between different mediums, using these materials throughout his work and continuing to think about the roles they play. Carrying traces of memory and experience but not clearly speaking for themselves, these quiet yet meaningful objects enter his work and gently shift ideas of time, space, and story. Yongkuk builds wooden box-like structures and fills them with objects, drawings, sculptures, and prints, almost as if sealing them inside. In doing so, he invites both himself and the viewer to look at the work from a slight distance. The semi-opaque acrylic panel at the front, along with his choice to stop arranging the contents at a point that may feel “unfinished,” makes the work harder to read right away. KOMPLEX presents A Practice of Distance, a two-person presentation by Yongkuk Ko and Yuchae Park, at Booth A1 of The Preview Seoul 2026 from April 23 to 26. This presentation offers an early look at the two artists ahead of their upcoming exhibition with KOMPLEX, and creates a space to explore-and compare-how each balances storytelling and form. In Yuchae’s paintings, we can sense hints of hierarchy, violence, and untairness. At the same time, tigures otten appear with their faces hidden-covered by another body or turned completely away-making their emotions hard to read. Interestingly, the artist‘s attention also turns back to herself: the one who watches, who hesitates, who does not step in. When you move closer to understand the scene, what you really encounter is the carefully built surface itself. Countless lines, drawn downward with powdered pigment on linen, slowly form her world.
