Through emergency alerts, journalism, music, and outreach events, @wxxirochester connects with the community in ways that many may not expect from a local public media station.  President Donald Trump has been attempting to remove federal funding for public media. Most recently, Trump asked Congress to cut funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the entity that provides federal funding to @npr , @pbs , and their member stations. As the threat of federal funding cuts looms large, PBS and NPR member stations, such as WXXI, may need to reduce some of their myriad offerings.  Full story in my link in bio. #rochesterny #wxxi #publicmedia #npr #pbs

Since 1995, Thomas Morton and his family and friends have been providing the Silver Spring, Maryland area with fresh Christmas trees. Open daily from Black Friday through Christmas Eve, the team at Tom’s Christmas Trees works through harsh winter conditions to provide their customers with a well-trimmed holiday season. This year, 1200 trees have been sold thus far, many going to long-time customers. #marylandnews #christmastree #multimediajournalism #journalism #montgomerycountymd

How expensive is Thanksgiving dinner in the DMV? Here’s a price comparison from three of the largest supermarket chains in Silver Spring, M.D. As a whole, Thanksgiving supermarket prices are down about 5% from 2024, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF). This is primarily due to the decrease in the price of frozen turkey. Does this national survey reflect what shoppers in the DMV are paying? An analysis between Safeway, Giant, and Whole Foods in Downtown Silver Spring, M.D. found prices could actually be lower than the national average. Story and Visuals by Max Conway. Smithsonian museums reopen after 43-day government shutdown ends. Many lined up for the Natural History Museum’s opening on Saturday. “It’s a nice, slow day actually, after the shutdown, so perfect day to get out,” said Marc Bernard, a visitor from St. Louis, MO. “We were surprised to see that most of them haven’t opened yet,” said Nireekshit Addanki Tirumala, from Bethesda. “But, this one was opening at 12, so we came and stood in line, and we were one of the first few people to get in.” The other museums gradually reopened by Monday. “Like yeah, I’m happy that it’s open, but also I know that not everything is completely figured out from the capital,” said Katie Perez, a college student currently living in the District. “Kind of more on the health insurance end of things.” The funding bill that reopened the government did not extend the expiring Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies that Democratic leadership fought for. If the credits are not renewed, recipients could see their health insurance costs more than double, according to the non-profit research group KFF. There is considerable frustration surrounding the government shutdown, which left thousands of government employees unpaid or furloughed. It disrupted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments and canceled flights nationwide, among many other effects. “We should not have let it go on for 42-43 days,” said Alexa Crucet of Arlington, VA. “That’s stupid.” “Congress didn’t do their job, that’s the bottom line,” said Bernard. “And in the end, they did their job and reopened, so obviously, they could have done it 30 days before.” Story and Visuals by Max Conway. #governmentshutdown #journalism #videojournalist #videojournalism

While FAA-mandated flight cancellations already begun on Friday, Nov. 7, the worst is yet to come for DC airports. The flight reduction requirements affect 40 airports across the country, including all three in the D.C. area. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says the cuts are meant to reduce the strain on air traffic controllers, who are currently unpaid due to the government shutdown and are often understaffed. In stark contrast to the 22 cancellations seen at both Dulles International (IAD) and Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), Reagan National (DCA) canceled 159 flights, according to FlightAware. This is likely due to staffing issues. Flight cuts began with a 4% daily reduction on Friday and are expected to increase to 10% by next Friday, Nov. 14. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that this number may rise if the shutdown continues. A Dulles employee, who requested to not be named, stated that the airport anticipates the worst impacts will occur next Friday. Story and Visuals by Max Conway. Copyright 2025. Thousands flocked to Six Flags America before gates closed for the last time on Sunday, Nov. 2nd. “I’m just upset that they’re taking something that’s historical away, and we gotta travel so far now just to have a little bit of fun,” said WickDaBarber (@cutzbyesha_ ) from Maryland. A security guard estimating attendance to be about 8,000 in the final part of the day. Lines stretched up to 2 hours, far above normal times. It is unclear what will happen with the rides and property after closing. Story and visuals by Max Conway. Copyright 2025, all rights reserved.

As the federal government shutdown passes its one-month mark, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits may not be provided to the 41.7 million Americans who rely on them monthly. Despite two federal judges ordering a timely delivery of SNAP benefits, it remains unclear if and when the administration will release the benefits. As many Marylanders typically receive their monthly benefits on the 4th of each month, the stakes are urgent. Christina Moore, the director of innovative meal programs at @shepherds_table , worries about the impact that losing SNAP benefits would have on not only their patrons but also their operations.  “Anytime you cut off resources to people in need, the effect is immediate, right?” says Moore. While the organization primarily serves individual adults, Moore believes it’s likely that families will also show up to receive a meal if SNAP benefits are halted. This could cause more strain on their operations. SNAP cuts are just another challenge for Shepherd’s Table and the broader food assistance system, Moore explains. Shepherd’s Table is enrolled in The Federal Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program enables non-profit food distributors to receive food at no cost. Earlier this year, Feeding America reported a $500 million hold to TEFAP.  “All the food service providers are already feeling the impacts of funding that has already been cut,” adds Moore. “I hope that we can find a way to sustain.”  Read more in the link in bio. Visual Story: The U.S. Army 250th Anniversary Parade. Scheduled on Flag Day and President Donald Trump’s birthday, the parade showcased the U.S. Army of yesterday and today. The area around the parade route was designated as a National Special Security Event (NSSE) by the Department of Homeland Security and featured heavy law enforcement and military presence. It is estimated that the total cost of the event to be between $25 million and $45 million. While many supporters attended the parade, there was a presence of protesters who oppose Trump’s actions, many of whom align with the “No Kings” movement.
