This pot has been such a labour of love. It had many opportunities in its making to fail, but it survived — until the very last moment.
Wednesday was a difficult day. The excitement of unpacking quickly gave way to disappointment when I discovered two fine vertical hairline fractures. The piece had been packed beautifully, but sometimes these things happen in transit. It’s an unfortunate reality of working in this field, where so much care and fragility coexist.

The 5th and final stage! A custom made wooden crete and careful foam packing, ensures that the piece is unable to move on the long journey down to Melbourne. I have done everything in my power to make sure the piece has transitioned without breakage in every stage of the process. The rest is out of my control. I’ve always said that my relationship with clay is always so much deeper. #australianceramics #throwingclay #woodfiring #womenwhowoodfire #contemporaryceramics

These pieces are part of the Finding Stillness collection. They were placed in the very volatile fire box of the wood fire kiln and were literally buried in ash. This is the process of grinding, sanding and finessing each piece making sure no sharp edges remain. These two found their home today @lightingcollective showroom. #woodfiring #lightingcollective #australianceramics #interiordesigninspiration #interiordesign
I can’t tell you the relief that I feel that the pot made it through the firing unscathed. There is so much that can go wrong in a wood firing. The subtle marking of the ash and flame have left their imprints and I couldn’t be happier! #womenwhowoodfire #throwingbigpots #australianceramics #throwingclay #woodfiring
Day 4 and we are done!!
After almost 80 hours of continuous firing, we closed up. Making sure that every crevice is patched up with slurry so no cool air can enter the kiln over the next week as it cools down. Thank you to the amazing team who made this Autumn firing not only possible, but so enjoyable. @studiosuvira@kiriko_ceramics@wintera@louise_pergomet@mandi_buri_ceramics@jennacatchpole.ceramics@gemmadavis.art Now the hard part…..waiting until Saturday week to open it up and see the magic that occurred. See you next week. 🔥🔥🔥#woodfiring #woodfiringkiln #womenwhowoodfire #woodfiringpottery #australianceramics
Day 3 and as the rain came down we got the temperature up. This technique in the clip is called a Dragons Mouth. You load the front (you can also do it in the side stoke ports) with wood and slowly push it through to the firebox. We got the temperature up to 1240 degrees and built up the ember bed to produce some beautiful acacia ash. 4am shift on day 2. Still have time at this stage of the firing to sit and chat before things ramp up for tomorrow’s shift. #woodfiring #woodfiringkiln #woodfiringkiln #australianceramics #throwingclay
