A lot of SXS owners don’t realize that better suspension tuning=more traction & handling=more speed.
A lot of guys go straight to upgrades for more power but a car with a lot of power that can’t stay grounded is a really dangerous car. It can’t be driven to its full potential. A well balanced, tailor-fit suspension tune makes a car going 75mph through whoops feel more comfortable and safer than a stock car going 45mph. A comfortable ride instills a lot of confidence in the driver to push the car further.

One of the fun things about suspension tuning is that as the tune gets better, the driver gets more confident and capable. This then leads the driver to push the car harder, which leads to a better more capable suspension tune. It’s a cycle that continues until the geometry of the car, the capabilities of the driver and the capabilities of the shocks are at their absolute limit.

One of the biggest indicators of where the SXS market is heading is the success of the Maverick R Smart-Shox models compared to the older X3 Smart-Shox platform. When Smart-Shox first debuted on the X3, many riders still viewed electronic suspension as a gimmick or something that couldn’t compete with properly tuned mechanical shocks. But with the Maverick R, consumer perception shifted dramatically. Buyers are now actively seeking the Smart-Shox trims, even at significantly higher price points, because the system feels far more refined, more capable at speed, and better integrated into the chassis as a whole. The Gen 3 FOX Live Valve system on the Maverick R is widely considered a major improvement over the earlier X3 setup, especially in controlling body roll, braking dive, and overall ride adaptability. Even among longtime mechanical-tuning enthusiasts, there’s growing recognition that the Maverick R’s electronic suspension package is changing expectations for what a factory SXS can do.
At the same time, the rise of Smart-Shox hasn’t eliminated the need for real suspension tuning — it’s simply changed the approach. At MTS Offroad, we’ve continued developing mechanical tuning packages for Smart-Shox-equipped vehicles and have seen major improvements in ride quality, bottoming resistance, predictability, and overall chassis balance. Electronic suspension can adapt quickly, but it still relies on a mechanical foundation underneath it. Proper spring rates, valving, crossover setup, and vehicle balance still make a massive difference in how the system performs. The results we’ve seen on the Maverick R prove that combining advanced electronics with properly engineered shock tuning can create a level of performance that neither system achieves on its own.
