Meet @BlueprintCoffee , a roastery that has turned its packaging into an interactive experience. We spoke to graphic designer Mary Grayson Batts to better understand what makes their packaging so successful.
“Blueprint Coffee’s retail bags are drenched in the specialty roaster’s signature shade of vibrant blue and feature bold, clean graphics,” says Mary.
“The bags include an innovative feature: each bag is labelled by a removable, collectable, and interactive card.”
Tasting cards are an increasingly common solution for roasters looking to maintain a clean packaging aesthetic without sacrificing depth of information.
They allow roasters to communicate origin stories, flavour profiles, and producer details without overcrowding the bag itself – and Blueprint’s interactive twist on the format makes each card something worth keeping.

Recyclable coffee bags with EVOH combine cutting-edge barrier science with real-world recyclability.
To unpack what they are, how they work, and whether they truly deliver on their promise, we spoke with Mieke Buntinx, a polymer scientist at Universiteit Hasselt, and her research on barrier packaging materials.
According to Mieke, EVOH demonstrates oxygen barrier performance which is “superior to standard packaging polymers like polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP)”.
For most specialty roasters, the evidence suggests that a well-designed EVOH bag preserves freshness to a commercially acceptable standard – without the sustainability cost of foil.
However, regional recycling infrastructure remains the biggest real-world barrier to realising the sustainability promise of recyclable coffee bags with EVOH.

Is the standard coffee packaging size changing? Shrinkflation is entering specialty coffee – roasters are quietly reducing the size of coffee packaging to protect margins, and how transparently they communicate this directly affects customer trust.
In this video, Elton Guillen from @EmenseCoffee discusses the trend of "shrinkflation" in packaging sizes, as noticed by coffee roasters and consumers on Reddit.

“Every bag is spray-painted by hand, meaning no two are ever identical. That individuality gives the packaging a sense of authenticity and energy that reflects the character of our coffees,” Eva Srvatkova, the Sales & Marketing Manager of @SpojkaRoastery , tells us.
Spojka Roastery, a Slovakian specialty coffee roaster, is known for its distinct packaging design. They use a "street art" style, where they take single-coloured bags and spray-paint them.

Branded recyclable coffee cups are a brand statement, not an afterthought. “Your brand is not just your logo or your interior. It is everything – your cups, your packaging, your menus, even how your team talks about what you serve. All of those little touchpoints add up, and when they are aligned, people can really feel that,” Caitlin Alexander, manager of @kaficafe , tells us. The branded coffee cups that leave your café travel through the city carrying your brand with them.
“We look beyond what sounds good and focus on what actually works here in the UK. Things like recyclability and compostability only really matter if the systems exist to support them,” Caitlin explains.

What should you prioritise in cocoa packaging? On crowded shelves, aesthetics and functionality will largely determine whether your cocoa catches attention or fades into the background.
Airtight, laminated cocoa packaging with resealable closures is essential for preserving freshness, especially for nibs used in small amounts at a time.
As cocoa packaging has evolved well beyond its protective role, it has become a powerful branding tool.
“We like to tell a little story. Some of our chocolates have a story on the inside, but on the outside, we really want to keep it simple,” Alberto Rivera, Founder of @BUNAMX , tells us.
It’s a clear illustration of BUNA’s minimalist approach to design.
