In light of our kindness campaign, the Afrocentric students’ society embarked on a journey to represent kindness on campus through art and community collaboration. This artwork simply serves as a visual reminder to show a little more kindness each day.
We would like to give a special shoutout to members of our community who helped put this art piece together. Special recognition goes to Dami and Anya for designing and spearheading this project.
Stay tuned for more updates on this campaign!!

This beautiful African Heritage Month poster was created by MSVU student Philip Ackuaku and Soumya Jain, Office Assistant in the Centre for Academic Advising and Student Success (CAASS) (@msvu_caass ).
Philip is a fourth-year psychology student, taking minors in biology and information technology. He is also a Mount Mentor (@msvu_mountmentors ) and President of MSVU’s Afrocentric Students’ Society (@msvu.afrosphere ).
Soumya supports MSVU’s Academic Advisors, Writing Centre, Learning Strategist, and the Black Student Support Office (@msvublackstudentsupport ) in her role with the CAASS. Soumya has worked at MSVU since January 2023, working in MSVU’s Residence Life Office (@msvuresidence ) before her current role.
The poster captures the theme of many of the on-campus African Heritage Month events: Empowering Through Education.

On February 2, the MSVU community gathered for an opening ceremony to kick-off African Heritage Month.
The event included a phenomenal libation ceremony by Kaneka Watkins Jackson and her daughter, Nailah-Ashe Jackson; an educational conversation between Amal Kenyi (an Elder) and MSVU students Philip Ackuaku and Anya Walcott; an engaging drumming performance by three MSVU students and Randy Headley, Advisor in the Black Student Support Office (@msvublackstudentsupport ); and a thoughtful spoken word poem performed by MSVU student Gift Iluyomade, written by another MSVU community member.
Thank you to the African Heritage Month Committee for bringing this event to life.

This African Heritage Month, we invite students to gather in community for a meaningful Elders Circle, a space for listening, learning, and intergenerational connection.
Education lives beyond the classroom. It lives in stories, lived experiences, and the wisdom shared by our Elders. Join us as we reflect on resilience, lifelong learning, and the values that guide us through change.
Come ask questions, engage in dialogue, or simply listen and learn in a welcoming and respectful space.
✨ Empowering Through Education.✨
