🔎 Close ups from ⚡️ Energy, Currency, Nicolas Cage ⚡️; a collaborative risograph publication made in 48 hours last week with students of this years Self Publishing Summer School, led by @somuchtoanswer + me 💕✨ The publication is based off a manifesto written by the summer school cohort ~ it features pop up pages and fold out sections; tiny craft knife cut doorways; multiple identity crises; an entire calendar; a love letter to an actor (I wonder who); poems that are rubber stamped, typed, collaged, handwritten, embossed; a bootleg nic cage cameo inspired by a sticker on the workshop’s printer. Edition of 30 ~ just for workshop participants and the archive 🥳 📖📖📖📖📖 Self-Publishing Summer School (SPSS) took place from 5th-9th August 2024 at @mcrschart as part of @manmetrise . It brought together a cohort of recent alumni and students from various backgrounds-Publishing, Fashion, Textiles in Practice, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Architecture, and lllustration with Animation. The SPSS cohort 2024 are: Anita Slater, Ellie Anderson, Emily Brown, Izzy Hellam, Jack Dean, Layla-Mae Lunn, Lucy Evans, Megan Poppy Fletcher, Michelle Beaver, Milena Nixon, Molly Granger, Sumeya Ahmed, Yanning Li, Yvonne Noworyta. This years school began with artist talks by Rahel Zoller (@rahel.zoller ), Ceremony Press (@ceremonypress ), Multitudes Zine Fest (@multitudeszinefest ), and Chris Printed This (@chris.printed.this ). #risograph #selfpublishing #selfpublishingsummerschool

Through “Stuck // Habituation”, I aim and continue to control and contain the uncontainable – the non-linear and terrifying nature of the cycle that anxious thought gets stuck within, and the dramatic reinvention taken to break out of it. The analogue image sits as a way of sole representation, and a primary language during periods of struggle, both before and in the aftermath of intervention. With small enquires challenging and documenting their daily lived experience, I question space, portraying snippets of the physical and emotional walls that I live within, showcasing monotonous moments which mask overbearing anxiety. Shaped by the space of the shower, a conflicting space for many who struggle with their mental health, provides a challenging place of sanctuary and self-regulation, whereby the goings on of the external are silenced, before being reintroduced in a cacophony once the water is shut off. Custom handmade portfolio box, comprised of three slipcases/drawers, and a built insert. Displays two publications, and two cyanotype tiles, alongside an array of black and white, and colour RA-4 darkroom prints. Stuck // Habituation. From the archives: I found all these photos after sharing the riso-cycled bone folders, looking back at @msoa.printmaking.bookbinding ’s various attempts to recycle risograph waste! and realised I never got round to sharing them here after the ceremony 💫 Before the 3D printing element was quite ready for the world, we made a series of silly trophies from discarded tubes. These were awarded to technicians during the 2023 technicians conference at @mcrschart , for various accolades but with a focus on sustainability and in house production 🏆 Made from risograph tubes + a perspex bottom to keep the ink in + a cast of a plastic participation trophy I got at a previous job, made with help of our wonderful ceramics technicians 🌟 #risograph

RISO-CYCLED BONE FOLDERS: now in the @mcrschart workshop! 🦴✨ For the last couple of years we’ve been trying to reduce our waste in the bindery, including the amount of plastic tubes and inky masters sheets that come with running two risograph printers. Queue the brilliant @hnnhwhtwrth — Hannah worked with the @manmetelectrochemistry department last year, who are repurposing plastic waste in house and designing new methods of waste reduction through 3D printing. Together they have turned our riso tubes and masters into bone folder tools using an inject moulding technique, to be tested by students at the art school to make zines and artist books this term 🌱📗 Big thank you to Hannah, Dr Robert Crapnell and the electro chemistry team at @manmetuni , plus our bookbinding technicians Lisa Lorenz (@somuchtoanswer ) and George Gibson (@georgegracegibson ) for their ideas and support💡🦴💫 #risograph

DEADLINE NEXT TUESDAY 🚨 We are once again looking for a collective to run a table on behalf of fellow MSoA students at this years @boundartbookfair , running Saturday 25th of October & Sunday 26th of October 2025! 🛸 This opportunity is open to any students on any course, plus recent graduates (class of 2025) 🎓 — deadline September 23rd. 📖📖📖📖 This years programme focuses on the idea of congregation: mass, ecstasy, inebriation, dancing, partying, altered states, fervour, and madness. Think clubbing, music scenes and raving, but also projects that channel ideas around collectivity and collective highs; critical mass initiatives and mass trespass; religious fervour; major public protest; and any late night group activity. However, your work on the table does NOT need to fit this theme. Selected students will showcase their own publications at the fair, and work with bindery staff to curate their table, creating a cohesive project plan and promotion strategy. Please apply with the following: > Information about the book / zine project you would like to bring to the fair — a description of the themes, format, printing method, edition size, etc. You must have at least five copies available for sale. > Link to either documentation of your book / zine, or previous work; online portfolios, Instagram or PDFs. > A short paragraph about why you’d like to be involved in set up and running of the table. > Whether you’re available to run the stall at The Whitworth during the dates stated above. Link in our bio to apply ✨ ✍️ 📖📖📖📖 Design by @georgegracegibson 👽

🚨 Deadline incoming for this year’s 20:20 Print Exchange! Drop your prints off with Mike in the Printmaking workshop by October Thursday October 14th. The 20:20 print exchange is a workshop-based print exchange organised by @hotbedpress who are an open print workshop based in Salford. The idea is that participants use printmaking processes such as etching, linocut, woodcut, screen printing, lithography, risograph and letterpress to create an original edition of prints. The prints are then entered as a collective and then paired and exchanged with other print workshops from around the world. Each participant will receive a mixed boxset of 20 different prints back from other artists. The prints of all the artists involved will also go on a tour to various locations as one big exhibition. All participants from MSoA will have our own mini exhibition here in the Lowry café gallery as well 🖼️ Above are four submissions we’ve had already for 2025: 1. Etching by Ciara Samson 🎠 2. Screen print by Michael Hitchens 🏢 3. Screen print by Vicki Wild 🍑 4. Risograph by Sophia Tang ☁️

My handmade portfolio box for my project Interlude! ☁️ 🪡 ‘Interlude is an invitation into the natural landscape, an interval and pause from the fast-paced world around us. The use of thread represents both the human connection to nature and Brookes’ journey through the landscape. Highlighting moments of nostalgia felt in places in which we are tied, and how we interlink with the landscape.’ photographs by : @saleemsamejaphoto & thankyou for the support and guidance @msoa.teamprint !!
