#WhyIDance 🧡 with @bostonballet principal Lia Cirio (@msliac )
“After a dance career of 20 years, it would be easy to wax poetic about the indescribable magic I feel onstage or in the rehearsal studio,” writes Cirio. “While there are moments when it truly feels like a dream come true, the reality is that there are countless times when the magic fades, and the difficulties of this career become almost overwhelming.“

Media description: Lia Cirio onstage wearing a light blue leotard and skirt poised in a retiré with her arms extended side. Text reads: Now, as a senior member of the dance world, I am not driven by obsession. I am drawn to art and art makers who push the way I think and how I view the world, and who can help develop my artistry. I no longer strive for technical perfection, but instead ask myself: Do my performances and my dancing touch someone?

After 2026…
As we close our Spring Experience rep today, I struggle to find the words to express how special it was to see my ballet come to life again so soon after its premiere. I’m forever grateful to all three casts of dancers, the staff on my side, the lighting, set and costume designers, the musicians that played this incredible score, and to Mikko for giving it another chance to live onstage.
After is a piece about the beauty that can emerge from devastation when people come together with love and kindness. We experience this as humans in big, worldly ways and in small, everyday moments. My only hope is that each audience member and dancer carries with them a bit of that love, kindness, and beauty…and continues creating it throughout their lifetime.
