last year's summer send-off nourished by @seanwho_seanliu of MSG kitchen 🍢
@msg.kitchen stands for My Sweet Grandma - an initiative that challenges the conventional definition of "American" by centering unique Asian American stories, histories, and ideologies that have long shaped this country's culinary identity and always belonged at the table.
fun fact: James Beard was raised by his family's Chinese cook Jue-Let & Chinese nanny Thema❣️🏳️🌈

The F Word: Farmers Market
This weekend’s @unsqgreenmarket farmers market haul included cucamelons and fennel, so I got creative with a cucumber salad that quickly turned into an unplanned fusion.
With no rice vinegar, sesame oil, or cilantro on hand, but armed with @msg.kitchen chili oil I let the local produce lead the way.
Fun fact: cucamelons, also known as Mexican sour gherkins, have been grown in Central America since pre-Columbian times. These tiny, tangy gems are a fresh twist on tradition – sometimes the best dishes are the ones that surprise you!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our pop-up and made it such a success! 🙏 The folks at Commune loved it so much that they’ve invited us back for September! 🎉
If you couldn’t make it last time, here’s your chance to come try our nihari noodles. And for those who did make it, we’re so grateful for your support—please tell your friends to come by next time!
See you soon! 🍜✨

The F Word: Nihari
I think fusion food gets a bad rep and I want to showcase the fusion dish for our upcoming pop up with @msg.kitchen
Here we’re combining elements of Nihari and Beef Noodle Soup to capture this elusive feeling for finding familiarity in an unfamiliar context.
We’re doing that along the lines of similarity - combining dishes that are already have a lot of parallel elements (but also history).
I wish more people developed fusion recipes like this that are more egalitarian and very much a 50-50 balance of East and South Asian flavors but in a totally new way!
This is one you can actually come try! RSVP at our link in bio. 😃
Lemme know what y’all think in the comments.

Meet today’s alumni spotlight: Umair Khakoo 👋🏼
Umair graduated in 2016 with a BS in Chemistry before pivoting to work in Tech. He went back to UT for a Data Science Certificate back in 2019, and now works as a Customer Facing Data Engineer for Informatica.
Outside of work, he’s passionate about food and has been pursuing that passion in NYC for the last three years. A two-time participant of our annual Texas Chili Cook-Off, he’s now hosting a can’t-miss pop up at Commune Cafe THIS WEEKEND in BK. Peep the link in bio for details. 🍜
Sunset Park Food Crawl:
Our latest food crawl was in the Sunset Park neighborhood with our friend @seanwho_seanliu from @msg.kitchen
Sunset Park is a fascinating neighborhood because it has two predominant communities - Chinese along 8th Ave and Hispanic along 5th Ave.
We wanted to show people what this fascinatingly integrated neighborhood looks like by way of food.
We tried Chinese and Mexican dishes from a variety of street vendors and talked about the history of those dishes, along with historical connections between Chinese and American communities which have influenced both cuisines.
It was a very hot day so we had to get a few things to cool us down, including yin yang, bing fan, Chamoyada and aguachile.
Watch this and our other reels to learn more!
Here are the spots we hit:
Xin Fa Bakery for Yin Yang and Egg Tarts
Jia Xiang 57th Street for Dou Hua
Kitchen Escape for Bing Fan, Oyster Pancakes and Grilled Enoki Mushrooms in Tofu Skin
Jian Bing Guo Zi on 8th Ave b/w 59th and 60th street for Jian Bing
Maya’s Snack Bar for Chamoyadas
Tacos El Bronco for Cabeza and Lengua tacos
King of Fish for Aguachile
Sunset Park for the Sunset 🌅
