“They wanted to use their art as a means of subtle resistance,” Mariam Ghani (@mostlywindows ) said about Afghan filmmakers working under the Communist party between 1978 and 1992, “because if you resisted openly, you would end up in jail or dead.” In her Creative Capital Project, WHAT WE LEFT UNFINISHED, Ghani looks at the history of the Communist era in Afghanistan through five unfinished films. Using clips from the unreleased works, and interviews from actors, writers, and filmmakers, she reveals the threats and censorship faced by filmmakers during the turbulent time. @whatweleftunfinished will be released by @dekanalog in virtual and physical theaters starting 8/6. See the Weekly Happenings link in our bio for more information.
