I’m grateful to stand alongside leaders who recognize the importance of mental health in youth sports. Alyssa’s Act (SB 26-060) sponsored by Senators Lindsey Daugherty and Rod Pelton, passed committee unanimously. This bill builds on what Colorado already requires by strengthening how coaches are prepared to respond when a young athlete is struggling. It adds a clear expectation for annual mental health education so coaches can better recognize warning signs and know what to do next. It also tightens concussion education by explicitly covering the connection between brain injuries and potential psychological or mental health changes. Sports play a major role in the lives of young people. When coaches are equipped with the right tools and knowledge, athletics can continue to promote confidence, teamwork, and well being while also protecting the mental health of student athletes. Supporting policies like this is one step toward addressing the youth mental health crisis and making sure Colorado’s athletes are supported both on and off the field.
