Kara (@theflippside ) and I have been meaning to link up and discuss her journey and ideals about ethics and sustainability for so long now and I’m happy I was finally able to get her on camera just in time for the end of AAPI Heritage Month. In the clip, Kara discusses the importance of sustainability as a Filipino American and her advocacy for garment workers. We spoke about a breadth of topics so I’ll be posting more of the conversation in the future, please enjoy! Thank you to Kara for teaching me a few things about textiles and bringing awareness to exploitation of garment workers. Interpreting Simrah’s concept for the video component was a beautiful exploration of what growth means to me. The communal care on one’s path and understanding how one can find their own strength within themselves is the acceptance we need as we grow. Blessings to the amazing team that helped bring this to fruition: Talent: @thesamaniist Photography: @simrahfarrukh Cinematography & Edits: @moha Wardrobe: @theflippside Hair + Makeup: @esthermha Lighting + Assist: @meggi.photography

This day, one year ago, I was in Hawaii, not realizing this would be the last trip I’d have in some time. . I’d been laid off the December prior and prepaid the vacation mid 2019. News was spreading about a potential shut down and my mother (whom I took with me) was worried about her health. They wouldn’t let me cancel the booking so it was either eat the money or take the chance — I’m happy we did. . We took precautions while there (I already owned a mask I used when traveling because I tend to get colds after long flights) and we enjoyed every minute. . One day after we got back, they shut alameda county down. My Lyft driver driving us from the airport tried to sell me toilet paper 😭 . Happy to have had the experience and look forward to traveling again, just need that sweet vaccine 💉
