- Auditory Aesthetics Series at NTHU ▍5/4 SOUND — IMAGE — LIGHT — SPACE In this talk, MONOCOLOR will give an overview of his artistic work which centers around the pillars sound, image, light and space and how these elements relate to each other. He will give insights in his approach to creating audiovisual performances and installations. He will also demonstrate some of his strategies to build flexible and robust audiovisual realtime systems, aiming to treat sound and image as the same material. Other topics like previsualization, working in dome environments and combining immersive video formats with immersive audio formats will also be covered. MONOCOLOR alias Marian Essl is a Vienna based audiovisual artist. He explores the interrelations between sound and image in both performance-based and installation-based works. His fully generative, algorithmically created imagery oscillates between fluid, organic textures and rigid structures. He focuses on the relation between sound, image, light and space, aiming to create highly immersive audiovisual universes. His work has been shown in various contexts around the world. In 2020, he was awarded the Japan Media Arts Festival New Face Award for his audiovisual fulldome performance Latent Space that was created during a residency at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT)  in Montréal. Entangled Structures — Lunchmeat Festival Last September, I presented Entangled Structures at Lunchmeat Festival in Prague. The piece was shown at Planetum, Europe‘s first 8K LED dome. Together with Lucas Gutierrez, who presented his new piece XYZ Craft, we sold out 7 screenings, presenting our works to more than 2000 people. MONOCOLOR Live A/V — Biennale Son Sentient Ocean is an audiovisual live performance which was inspired by the intelligent ocean on the planet Solaris described in the novel by Stanisław Lem of the same title. The essence of the project is to create a fluid, ever-changing audiovisual experience that allows the audience to immerse themselves in sound and image. Both audio and video are generated in real time, existing between what is natural and what is synthesized. Loosely referring to Lem’s work, the project touches upon topics such as emergence, systems theory, identity and the relationship between machine and nature. Entangled Structures — Fulldome A/V Performance — CULTVR Cardiff Late last year, I returned to CULTVR to share the current state of Entangled Structures. Originally developed there during the CATALYST 360º residency, the piece has evolved considerably since its first iteration, making this return to its place of inception particularly special. Experiment, Capture, Recall: TouchDesigner & Ableton for Live AV Performances Artist Talk at the TouchDesigner Event Tokyo 2025 This talk explores the process of designing a custom audiovisual performance system that integrates TouchDesigner and Ableton Live into a flexible creative environment. MONOCOLOR begins by discussing the early stages of experimentation with generative visuals and sound, and how these explorations evolved into a more structured workflow. From there, he’ll show how audiovisual ideas can be captured, refined, and turned into reusable building blocks that form the foundation of the system.
