recent sketchbook dump.
Partly for lack of any new comics to show.
Mostly drawn with fountain pen, a few with different nibs (Hunt 102 & Conté Atome) and one (easy to identify) in brush
É autor de Six Treasures of the Spiral: Comics Formed Under Pressure, Ex Libris e Drawn Onward, inéditos no Brasil, e 99 Ways to Tell a Story, que em breve será publicado pela Veneta. Nascido em Nova York, Matt já morou na França e no México e atualmente vive na Philadelphia com sua esposa, a também quadrinista Jessica Abel, e seus dois filhos.

Muito Legal!
I'm very excited to share that I have two books coming out in Brazil in the near future.
@editoraveneta has officially announced that they will be publishing 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style (no pub date announced but there is already a translation).
Much sooner, @ugra_press will be publishing my short story Bridge as A Ponte (in a translation by @mckamiquase and @lielsonzeni ). As I understand it, this is on its way to the printer now with the goal of having it ready for the upcoming OGRA! festival in São Paulo later this month.
Maybe I'll finally be able to come down to visit in the near future…
New podcast drop! Just recorded an hourlong wide-ranging conversation with @grogangeoff where we delved into my journey as a cartoonist and teacher.

Sign up now for my Build Your Own Labyrinth class and learn how to use constraints to spark creativity and surprise yourself with your own inventiveness!
Online class begins March 21, info in bio or at @comicsworkshop
Just take a look through this gallery of work by previous students to get an idea of the variety and weirdness of the work we'll do together. Some of the assignments include:
I. Comic with a restricted POV and no people in it:
1. Shelley E
2. Gudrun Royer
3. Julie De Vries @julie_devries
4. Rachel Kurtz
II. Word ladder comic (based on a Lewis Carroll word game):
5. Alice Joanou
6. Kat Tuesday @krazykattuesday
III. Template comic with the rules:
-pre-determined page layout
-sound effect in middle panel
-use dialog "This is the last time"/"You always say that":
7. Gudrun Royer
8. Kristen Haas Curtis @hellomizk
9. Susan Marks @smarks42
One comic, three languages. The text of each comic is a "phonetic pangram" -- kind like "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" but instead of letters it includes every sound in a given language (English, French, and Spanish, in this case).

UPCOMING ONLINE CLASS: Build Your Own Labyrinth with Matt Madden! @mmaddencomics
Link in bio!
"Build Your Own Labyrinth" is an online laboratory where you will surprise yourself by creating comics in response to seemingly impossible (or simply absurd) rules that will push your creativity into unexpected new areas. But don't be intimidated: working with constraints is playful, like using your crossword or jigsaw puzzle mind in the service of art. You will lose yourself in a lucid trance of "deep play" and when you emerge, you'll be amazed at the directions your engagement with constraints has taken you.
By the end of the workshop you'll have a handful of experimental comics under your belt but, just as importantly, you'll have a firm grasp of a radical and all-encompassing approach to creativity that you will continue to explore in your future work.
📆 Where: Saturdays on Zoom Starting March 21, 2026
🕦 When: 1 PM – 3 PM Eastern / 10 AM – 12 PM Pacific
