Race day should be the culmination and celebration of your training. Familiarize yourself with what to expect to ease nerves.
Here's a sample with 6 Race Day Tips:
1/ Stick to Your Plan: Follow the pacing and fuelling strategy you’ve practiced, starting conservatively and gradually increasing your pace. Trust in your prep and avoid temptation to go out too fast.
2/ Hydrate and Fuel: Stay hydrated by drinking water and consuming electrolytes throughout. Fuel with easily digestible carbohydrates to maintain energy. Take advantage of water stations, never litter.
3/ Dress for Success: Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather. Wear your race outfit during training, and lay out your racing gear the night before to ensure you remember everything.
4/ Focus on Form and Breathing: Relax your stride and shoulders, keep your head up and maintain a steady rhythm. Controlled breathing can help oxygenate your muscles and keep you focused.
5/ Stay Mentally Strong: Break the distance into smaller segments and set achievable goals for each. Visualize yourself crossing the Finish Line strong. Stay motivated with positive self-talk.
“I have different phrases that I use, that I repeat," adds Olympian and multiple-time event champion Natasha Wodak during one of our Elite Panels.
"Maybe tonight you can all write down some positive affirmations that you can use when it gets tough."
"Mine is 'yes I can, this is my race.' And sometimes I actually say it out loud. It really does help. I want you to try that tomorrow when you’re really struggling, to just keep saying positive words.”
6/ Embrace the Crowd and Enjoy the Experience: Let the energy of the crowd carry you forward. Their support and cheers can help boost your morale and provide a source of motivation during the race.
Have a favourite positive affirmation? Have tips or are there other topics you'd like to hear about? Drop 'em in the comments.
Love competition.
