The Spaces In Between, a @needessentials production, is hitting the road this month and coming to a theatre near you along the east coast of Australia! 🎬
A film by @milo_inglis follows @brebsy as she sets out to bike and surf the length of New Zealand with no previous cycling experience (her sidekick @hahneevail joins in for a portion, too!) 🚴♀️
The legends behind the film are also donating all ticket sales to SurfAid, so there’s no reason not to come join us at your local screening!

With no previous cycling experience, @brebsy (Johanna Brebner) sets out to bike the length of her childhood home, Aotearoa New Zealand, surfboard in tow. Returning after a decade away, she packs her life onto a bike and travels more than 2,000 kilometres across the country in search of reconnection and a few waves along the way.
Produced by needessentials Spaces In Between is a portrait of slow travel: of challenge, endurance, new friendships, and the exhilaration of landscape. Beyond the pursuit of waves, the film explores what it means to experience a place over time, revealing what unfolds in the spaces in between.

Last year I went on a sailing voyage with dave rastovich and @mystomiyashiro up the east coast of Australia. We talked to some epic human beings, had some incredible wildlife encounters and got a few waves along the way. Its been so much fun turning that time into a film, that im really excited for the world to see! If you are on the east coast come check out ‘Sensing Home’ at the end of this month/ early may!

Every filming mission has something that makes it special and filming for ‘Nusantara’ was no exception.
Indonesia offers so much excitement in various facets that sometimes it can be easy to overlook the smaller details that are such a huge reason why so many keep coming back. For me, all of those moments were provided by the amazing group of surfers I got to spend time with while filming.
As any filmer knows; going to Indonesia means spending long hours in the sun, squinting out into a bright sparkling ocean trying to focus on one or two surfers out of dozens in any given lineup. We wait for the sets to roll in and hope to god after our surfer kicks out of a wave the shot was in focus, wasn’t shaky and we actually remembered to hit record. It tends to be a long and often frustrating process.
However, what makes it all worth it after the day wraps up is having the opportunity to get a real glimpse into the lives of how the locals live.
Whether it’s sitting down for a meal prepared by Usman’s sister.
Or going to a Balinese ceremony with Kopral.
Riding through the busy Kuta streets to meet Dhea at her dad’s drink stand.
Having a jungle BBQ with Tedi’s mum
Or folllowing Mencoss up a precarious jungle track to find the best view of his hometown.
These seemingly small moments were captured on camera or not, but will all stay with me. All the time spent with this crew made me feel like I really got to see the real Indonesia. A version that goes beyond just scoring pumping surf but more on a level of connecting with people where they are most comfortable and what an experience is like for someone growing up in a completely different place to me.
I think everyone who visits that land will relate to how beautiful and kind spirited the people are. Ultimately that’s what ‘Nusantara’ is all about and why I am so proud of the film and all the amazing surfers featured.
To Dhea, Usman, Kopral Tedi & Mencoss: Thank you so much for welcoming me into your homes, hanging out and telling me your stories. It was an honour to make this film with you all and I feel incredibly lucky to be provided the opportunity from Drifter.
So excited to show this film to the world!
Nusantara: Waveriders of Indonesia is a love letter to the beautiful archipelago of Indonesia and its people. It focuses on indonesian surfers and what it’s like to grow up in the thick of a surf mecca with perfect waves on your doorstep. It was an honour to hang out with all these beautiful people, help them tell their stories and experience such a vibrant culture. Thank you to @driftersurf for making this project happen and being incredible support. So proud of this piece and all of the humans involved! I really hope everyone enjoys watching the film as much as I did making it.
Premiering Oct 22 on Drifter Surf’s YouTube Channel.

Got to explore my home turf in the comfort of a rental van, at the pace of a bicycle. I was blown away by New Zealand- the people, the landscapes, the waves and the gas station cuisine. But I was more blown away by @brebsy and her herculean effort to peddle the whole way under her own steam. It was an honour to help capture her journey and the best darn time doing it. Thank you to @needessentials for making it all possible and thank you all the amazing people who we met along the way.
This last EAST series was incredible and informative thanks to Dave and Danny’s insight, vision and humour. I feel lucky to have been a small part of this project and film some stuff that made the cut!
