One of my all time favorite licks in the bass rep, from Mendelssohnâs thorny and brilliant âItalianâ Symphony! I am so excited to perform this piece with the amazing Orchestra of St. Lukeâs at @carnegiehall this week under the baton of Masaaki Suzuki and featuring Midori playing Beethovenâs Violin Concerto.
I am still glowing from this past Sunday! It was the most amazing experience of my career to perform the New York premiere of Tan Dunâs Contrabass Concerto at Lincoln Center @jazzdotorg and to share the stage with the indescribably brilliant Maestro @tan_dun and all of my wonderful colleagues of @theorchnow who played so beautifully.
Tan Dunâs WOLF TOTEM is a breathtaking piece of music and art â a truly epic musical journey that showcases the double bass in ways I did not think were possible. It was so meaningful to have so many friends on stage, and friends and family in the audience. Thanks so much to all who came out!!!

As I think about the people of Iran, Iâm sharing this old video of Iranian composer Behzad Ranjbaranâs gorgeous âElegyâ for bass and piano. Tehran, the city my family is from, home to 10 million people and some of the world oldest and most stunning architecture, is in flames right now. It pains me to see these heartbreaking images and Behzadâs music captures many of the emotions Iâm feeling. We pray, of course, for a free and democratic Iran, but also one free from bombs, indiscriminate killing, and endless warfare. #iran
