Just looking over some old work and thinking about how I could recapture (or how I lost) that early looseness. Maybe everything became a bit formulaic in subsequent years or I became too wedded to the aesthetic. Wish I could have exhibited more in all honesty. I have so much work sitting in boxes it makes me kind of sad. Perhaps it’s time for the ‘Mike Carney: Retrospective’ show I’ve often day dreamed about! Anyway, give me a shout if you’re interested in exhibiting or buying anything.

New design work: ‘Queue Up And Dance – Remembering Quadrant Park 1990-91’. This book brings together memories and experiences of some of the lucky ones who frequented one of the UK’s earliest, legal, acid house ‘all-nighters’, at Quadrant Park, located in a massive old warehouse in Bootle, Liverpool. This was a dream project for me because although I didn’t experience the club first-hand, I was well aware of its popularity (and notoriety!) at the time. Instead I created an imagined experience of the club informed by a fuzzy old mix tape a friend gave me in the early 90s. The atmosphere and energy within that tape was a big inspiration when I was DJing and later producing dance music so it’s been nice to reflect and connect with the club again through this design project. It was a pleasure working with Liverpool based artist David Jacques recently. We designed a book to accompany his exhibition, ‘The Cyborg Insects and The Sargasso. The Sargassum and The Entrepreneur’ at The Bridewell Gallery. The book is case bound with white foil text and features artworks, texts and additional imagery from the exhibition. I’m pleased to report that a new issue of Drawing Paper will be available this evening to accompany the new Drawing (Paper) Show 2025, at The Bridewell Studios and Gallery, Liverpool. Massive thanks to Jon Barraclough @j0ni0la , Collette Lilley @colettelilley , Sarah Jane Richards @walk.draw.paint and Curtis Holder @curtisartist for all their work managing the open call and selection process, artist liaison, artwork handling, logistics, photographing artworks, social media spamming, hanging the show… and everything else involved in facilitating a project of this scale … on a small budget. It really is a huge undertaking. Round of applause please. All I had to do was design the new issue of Drawing Paper which is always a great pleasure.
