I still can’t believe it. DD/Zaza/Diana I love and miss you so much. We were just on vacation together four weeks ago with our tiny bathtub xxxmas crew, eating family meals, going to the beach, and you were giving us brain massages. I’m still in shock, and remembering our day in Malibu together talking about our childhoods, art, and life. You told me that you wanted people to be together and to be happy at your shows and you did that. You built us worlds where we felt free to be ourselves and to feel and love and learn from each other. You were a revolution, “a dramatic and wide-reaching change in the way something works or is organized or in people’s ideas about it.” DD you changed us in so many ways, reminding us to demand better and to be better. I am still at a loss for words, but in moving through this, I want to remember that you are a star in the sky who through your life, friendship, and art, burst into a million other stars, and that light is in each and every one of us who got to witness and love you. You are shining in our hearts forever, lighting the sky, and healing the universe with your song ❤️
Get to know our Catalyst Fellows! Introducing Melissa Li (she/her) & Kit Yan (they/he/she), creators and writers for theater, TV and film; Jonathan Larson Award & Kleban Prize recipients.
As part of the Catalyst Fellowship, Melissa and Kit are working MISS STEP Training Intensive for Trans Actors, providing trans theater performers– an underserved community in the arts sector– with the unique opportunity for Broadway-level training as well as targeted resources and greater visibility to casting agents.
“There is a clear lack of trans stories told on mainstream stages and, on the rare circumstances when trans stories are represented, they are usually relegated to fringe theater. Theater productions by trans writers account for less than 1% of theater productions in the United States, while only 0.27% of named characters in Broadway productions are non-binary or transgender. This lack of trans stories on stage results in a lack of training resources and professional opportunities for trans artists, many of whom do not even have a professional audition tape to send to casting agents, a vital asset for performers.
We will be using our upcoming production of MISS STEP as the basis for the pilot program.
MISS STEP is our new musical featuring an all-trans cast. In our past workshops, we struggled to find actors who not only had formal training but were also confident in their bodies. While working closely with our lead actor in a February 2023 workshop, we saw how she struggled with keeping up with the rest of the cast, especially with singing and dancing, which sparked the idea for a “boot camp”-style training intensive. We hope that our program boosts the skills and confidence for trans/nonbinary talent while helping them gain valuable hands-on guidance from industry professionals.
If successful, we hope to have the tools to recreate this program for other shows that prominently feature trans/non-binary actors.” - Melissa Li and Kit Yan
Made @ashluka ’s auntie’s famous party mix! My grandma came in during the shoot at some point so I had to put my shirt back on. Sorry!
