We are proud to share Georges E. Sioui’s second single, a Huron-language ballad written in 1972 “Ahouantahan Nesa Yeein”, from his forthcoming debut album For All Tomorrows. The septuagenarian Huron-Wyandot polyglot, poet, essayist, and songwriter releases For All Tomorrows via Watch That Ends the Night on May 29th. You can pre-order the album via our bancamp. The melancholic, “Ahouantahan Nesa Yeein,” sees Sioui tracing long, melismatic vocal phrases that not only defy his age but almost seems to shrug off the fact that he grapples with the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. His generous, intricate melodies variously flow and crawl chromatically across a spacious arrangement with Laura Bates’ violin providing wordless replies. Before ever entering a recording studio, Sioui led an extraordinary life. Born in Wendake, Quebec (at that time called Village-des-Hurons), Sioui is the first Canadian person of Indigenous heritage to have earned a Doctoral Degree in History. He initiated and co-defended the Sioui Case at the Supreme Court of Canada, setting an important precedent for interpretations of Indigenous treaty rights and Native status within Canada. He is a world-renowned speaker on the history, philosophy, spirituality, and education of Aboriginal peoples. For All Tomorrows is a collection of eleven songs that Sioui composed between 1972 and 1999. Sioui sings in English and French, but his work also foregrounds Huron, his ancestral language. Sioui seeks to honour the spirit of the language through his songs. Written by Georges E. We are thrilled to announce Kingdom Come, Kingdom Go, the forthcoming album from Michael Cloud Duguay,. The album chronicles seven different church organs found in seven different historic churches scattered in an equal number of remote regions throughout Newfoundland. With over a year’s worth of research, planning, and connecting with these various outport churches, the album was recorded in just nine days, travelling over 900 miles with collaborator + engineer Jake Nicoll’s mobile, solar-powered recording studio, The Scamper, the third album produced by this team with Nicoll’s technology. The organ features prominently throughout the album, but rather than acting as a standard issue record of organ music, it’s more of an abstract musical documentary about organs. In July 2024, Duguay’s and Nicoll set out on their journey alongside collaborators Andrew MacKelvie, Dave Grenon, and photographer Noah Bender, following the eastern perimeter of the island northward, with stops on coastal islands Greenspond and Fogo, they made their way up to the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula, ending up on Newfoundland’s west coast after travelling more than 1500 kilometres. Kingdom Come, Kingdom Go’s first offering, “Winterhouse”, was recorded on the organ of the Memorial United Church in Bonavista, Newfoundland, and features Cormac Culkeen of Scions - another project of Duguay’s, whose debut album To Cry Out In The Wilderness arrived in 2024 on @ideefixerecords records, alongside Duguay’s organ performance and MacKelvie’s saxophone. Today we are absolutely thrilled to announce the debut album by 77 year-old Huron-Wyandot polyglot, poet, essayist, and songwriter, Georges E. Sioui — ‘For All Tomorrows’ To say that Georges E. Sioui’s debut album positions him as an utterly singular figure within the Canadian folk music landscape requires precisely zero hyperbole whatsoever; Sioui had been leading an extraordinary life long before entering a recording studio. He is a world-renowned speaker on the history, philosophy, spirituality, and education of Aboriginal peoples. In 1982, he initiated, and co-defended the Sioui Case at the Supreme Court of Canada. The next year, he became the first Canadian person of Indigenous heritage to have earned a Doctoral Degree in History. He has since published five landmark books and taught First Nations Studies at Universities across North America. For All Tomorrows collects eleven songs that Sioui composed between 1972 and 1999 and frames these compositions in his distinctive baritone. He sings in English and French, and his work also foregrounds Huron, his ancestral language. The album was produced by Michael Cloud Duguay, and the all star ensemble includes Liz Hysen (Picastro), violinist Laura C. Bates (of Völur), Alex Fournier (of Picastro, Triio, Fortunato Durutti Marinetti) on upright bass, internationally renowned drummer Nick Fraser, and Brandon Valdivia (Mas Aya, Lido Pimienta) on percussion. On top of serving as the producer, Duguay played piano and keys and sang. The sessions were engineered, mixed and mastered by Andy Magoffin at his House of Miracles studio in Cambridge, Ontario. For All Tomorrows is a vibrant, life-affirming LP that expressively documents Georges E. Sioui’s unusual ingenuity as both a composer and singer. Bold, thoughtful and energetic, it carries the unmistakable feel of a debut album even though it is born from profound wisdom and a wealth of experience. Closed City, a collaborative project by Mathias Kom and Michael Cloud Duguay, release their self titled album today. The album takes as its subject the Soviet-era closed cities — deliberately isolated settlements removed from official maps, built around military and industrial operations, their residents sworn to secrecy. Duguay’s music draws on experimental metal, drone, musique concrète, and low brass arrangements; Kom’s lyrics construct an unnamed city whose inhabitants have long forgotten why they are there. Andrew MacKelvie’s Many Worlds is out today on @watchthatendsthenightrecords . The single most rewarding and enriching creative relationship in my life is the one I share with Andrew - when I met Andrew, I started learning how to make the sort of music I’d always wanted to make. With this project, I got to contribute to his goal of making the sort of music he’d always wanted to make. I’ll never forgot walking around downtown St. John’s with Andrew while he described the concept for this project and I just knew how we could make it happen. I’ll never forget these sessions - absolutely brilliant team of musicians collaborating with such warmth and intention and so much feel. I’m ever grateful to be a Halifax creative music community cosplayer and thankful every day to know Andrew and this amazing community of friends that he introduced me to. Listen to this record! Closed City is a collaborative project from songwriter Mathias Kom and composer Michael Cloud Duguay inspired by the dozens of ‘closed cities’ established during the Cold War. The two Canadian artists had worked together extensively in the 2000s, lost touch, then reconnected in 2021 and conceived of a project which would combine their shared interests in avant-garde metal traditions, drone, musique concrete, folk, and orchestral music. During a two-week artist residency on a remote eastern archipelago of Finland’s North Karelia, in January 2024, Duguay composed the project’s music while Kom wrote the lyrics. In extreme winter conditions, the two lived together in a centuries-old log house at the tip of a coniferous headland, warmed by a masonry heater, surrounded by unexplored rocky islands and a WWII military defense line on the Finnish-Russian border. Rejoining a year later, Kom and Duguay produced the album in the distant North Atlantic harbour city of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Joined by a team of local collaborators including a six-piece low-brass ensemble, the album was recorded over five days in a decommissioned church. ‘Closed City’ is out March 27 on WTETN. Listen to the album’s first preview, ‘Ice Fig - No Exit’, and pre-order your copy today. I’m looking forward to returning to Halifax this week for @upstreammusicassociation Open Waters Festival. I’ll be premiering a new piece - Song for Omar - that I composed while I was an artist in residence at Gamli Skóli on Hrísey island in northern Iceland. The material has been arranged by Andrew MacKelvie for the mighty @many_worlds_band and @zoelegermusic , and will feature some visuals incorporating videos I took on the island. It’s an honour to be invited to this wonderful festival, and to close this year’s programming with this material performed by my dear pals. First photo taken by @fleeting_pictures on the banks of the canal in Den Haag, NL after Gino stopped me while I was wandering on the first day of the Black Noise tour.
