🖤 RECLAMATION 🖤 On Sunday night, the @first.nations.fashion.design band got back together. Not for nostalgia. Not to recreate a moment. But to remind the industry: what happens when Blak creatives lead from a place of sovereignty, community, and truth! The same Blak Magic that electrified our historic 2021 Australian Fashion Week runway came roaring back into the room at @artspacesydney . You could feel it backstage. In the audience. In the music. In the bodies moving down the runway. Not manufactured hype. Not industry performance. Something older. Something carried. Something ancestral. And in many ways, RECLAMATION felt more necessary now than ever before. At a time when Blak stories are still being politicised, silenced, appropriated and diluted, this independent runway became an act of resistance. A reminder that First Nations fashion is not a trend, a diversity initiative or a moment in the cycle; it is culture, ceremony, storytelling and sovereignty continuing forward on our own terms. Because while this industry continues to profit from Blak aesthetics, Blak stories, and Blak culture, it still too often struggles to make space for blak authority. Too often, we are invited into systems never built for us and asked to feel grateful for visibility while ownership, power and control remain untouched. RECLAMATION was also a radical act of independence. Entirely self-determined and independently produced, the runway was built through community, collaboration and sheer collective force, not institutional permission. Every part of the show carried the fingerprints of mob. That independence was not only logistical, it was also political. It proved that Blak fashion does not need validation from legacy systems to create work that is world-class, culturally powerful, and impossible to ignore. This was never about reclaiming a seat at someone else’s table. This was about building our own fire and watching people gather around it. RECLAMATION was a warning shot. A love letter. A ceremony. Minns knows the importance of prayer and it’s ability to connect us to “our” god. Prayer is a sacred experience. Minns, who also attended a Marist College, same, knows the teachings of the Marist Brothers. And it is, while as Catholics, recognise “our” god is the “true” god, we are respectful of people from other religions. We were taught to engage with people from all walks of life…ALL! As a Marist student, we were taught to stand with those who were oppressed, the poor, those who were vulnerable, voiceless. We were taught the true meaning of Christianity. Whilst, I am no longer a practicing Christian those Marist values have never changed. So, Minns, what happened to you…turning your henchmen on men of the Muslim faith who were praying, innocent protesters, violently assaulting the citizens you were elected you to protect, who were peacefully protesting against a WAR CRIMINAL, that by international law, we need to arrest. Finis Coronat Opus…is yesterday your legacy…. Your actions are the antithesis of Marist and Christian values. You can’t and we won’t let you, spin your way outta this.
