Happy 2nd birthday to
@cafemutsi , the baddest Finnish bakery upstate, and chef-baker
@nicolebassis who has created something mighty and magical in the western Catskills. 🥖 We couldn’t let this milestone pass, so we jumped in the car and drove an hour and 40 minutes from Troy to Andes—“the land in the sky”—for dinner. (Thanks,
@kermcgarry for always being game.)
With Mutsi dinners now happening *every* Friday and Saturday night, sometimes with vinyl or industry friends, chef Bassis is turning out a kind of eclectic, elevated girl dinner: Anchovy Gildas, duck rillettes wirh thick toasted Mutsi bread, marinated butter beans, fennel and blood orange salad, cilantro meatballs, and ramp carbonara with pappardelle made with from leftover sourdough breadcrumbs for a textured, nutty marvel. Was there a crisp Azimut cava from Catalonia, Spain, in that orange wine bucket? Yes. Lemon dandelion posset with pistachio meringue for dessert? Absolutely. A tiny tasting of local
@isolationproof gins just because we needed to revisit the latest ramp, strawberry-rhubarb, orchard apple and mushroom expressions? (Nice work, Jake — I came up with mushroom gin + amaro for you.) Did we leave with fresh Mutsi loaves and salted French butter? Of course. No one has ever been happier the next day.
Let us put you on to Cafe Mutsi as a destination, but if you’re not a nighttime road warrior, go in the morning for crusty fresh bread, Finnish breakfast, lunch plates, and natural wine. On thedishing.com this week, we have recommendations for where to eat and what to do in Andes, Bovina and Bloomville (incl.
@brushlandeating house,
@bovinafermentory + Alison Roman’s little
@firstbloomcornerstore , plus options for where to stay.) Where is Andes? Roughly half way between Kingston and Cooperstown, with Mutsi’s Finnish pastries for fuel and appeal.
Meet chef Nicole Bassis in our tastemaker interview at TheDishing.com + wish Cafe Mutsi a birthday week as bright as their bucket! 🎂 🧡
