Another day another darn. This button-down crochet number from @fab_scrap had a rip in the back. I made a cute lil darn in two different blues using sashiko thread. Maybe I actually drew more attention to the rip in this way, but I still like the lil pop against the navy. I’ve got some upcoming intro to clothes mending workshops happening in May & June. Reach out if you’d like me to send you the links or look in my bio for more info 🪡🩵🧵💙

Thank you @messyjessimending for hosting our first art materials swap, and to everyone who brought creative stuffs from as far as the East Village! Among cans of paint, stacks of paper, and brushes, we found shredded dollar bills, tattoo needles, a Santa hat someone had cut through, and a mysterious “protector hood”…

🪡NEW MEND🪡 Another day, another piece out of the mend pile. There was some paint spots I covered with a few little patches, running stitches, and sashiko thread. About eight items left in the pile, many of which are quite boring so probably won’t post. Hopefully someone enjoys this jumpsuit now that it’s out in the world 🫒🏵️🩶

🪡 RECENT MEND & UNSOLICITED RANT🪡 Patched the back of these @fab_scrap jeans with a very large denim patch also sourced from FabScrap. I used sashiko thread & running stitches to add some strength and a bit of pizazz. While I love doing projects like this, I recently realized just how many random fast fashion items are in my mending pile. If an item (or 10) were leftover from a swap with a tear or rip, I convinced myself I could fix them. Probably 20 something mended items later, I still have 8 items left in this pile. Most of these items I recirculate to other free stores, they are fun to work on, but they aren’t items that fit my own body or aesthetic. I very easily can get swept up in a moment of direct action (ie: if I mend this item, then that’s one less item in a landfill here in the US or abroad) instead of focusing on the systems at play. Both are important, but I’m putting a hard stop and only mending items that aren’t fast fashion or are for family & friends. It’s time for the sheins, amazons, forever21s, skims, and nikes to step up and take accountability.

Spent yesterday Feb 28th being hella busy! 📱 STOP #1: dropping off electronics & scrap fabric to be recycled. I found out about this drop off recycling event through @lesecologyctr 👗STOP #2: helping out at @nastynewyorkers free clothing store! There was also some lunar new years parades going on and a dragon who visited us 🐉🐎🔥 STOP #3: Helping out @repaircafebklyn ! I worked with someone to fix a beautiful chain linked coin purse 👛 Forever grateful for nonprofits that help keep the world circular and grassroots orgs that step up when there aren’t policy or systems to handle so much clothing and items that need repair

Today my family said the very difficult goodbye of sending our sweet Simba on his next adventure in his next life, When Simba was first brought home, it was about 6 days after our previous dog had passed. Convinced I knew everything about grief, I was icy and cold to him, telling him he would not replace Sneakers. I don’t think he genuinely tried to win me over, I don’t think it ever occurred to him that I didn’t like him, he just spent time on my bed as I tried to do Honors Bio homework and assumed I was there to spend time with him and play with him. Over a few days, my walls broke down, how could they not? He was a little ball of yellowy-brown fluff, that just wanted to be loved 💛🐕

Myself and @thebrooklynartery are hosting a clothing mending workshop this Sunday from 2-4pm! This is a great workshop for hand sewing beginners or anyone who wants to reconnect with their clothes. We’ll start off with journaling and a short discussion about our relationship with our clothes & wardrobe, practice hand sewing, and then work on items we brought to mend. Bring those jeans with a tear, or that shirt with a rip; cotton based items are ideal but I have lotsa scrap fabric for other projects too. Registration is at the link in my bio; let’s yap, sew, and give our clothes new life 🪡♻️🧵

Had so much fun at @artmageddonbk yesterday! Thanks for chatting about textile waste, mending clothes, and showing your support for Zohran! I’ll be making another round of patches and I’m thinking about a prospect park printing session where people can sew on or print on their own clothes, tote bags, etc. Would you come? I’m canvassing this Wednesday night, you can too at /volunteer/events

✨ Tomorrow I’ll be at @artmageddonbk in front of 330 Westminster! I’ll have a few mended clothing pieces for sale (sliding scale), be sharing about textile waste, and giving away block-printed patches to anyone who’s canvassed for Zohran. 💙 Just show me your zetro card with a sticker or the canvassing group chat, and a patch is yours. These patches were hand-printed in my backyard on denim from @fab_scrap and leftover jeans from clothing swaps. Curious about hosting a block printing or mending workshop with your friends? Or want to run a clothing swap but don’t know where to start? I’m your girl, let’s chat tomorrow ♻️🧵💬
