As the Colorado-based cinematographer on On Lifelines, the story asked for a lot of patience, presence, and adaptability—especially because we were filming with a three-year-old, along with her parents and baby sister. This meant our technical approach had to stay flexible and unobtrusive. We kept our footprint small as a team and prioritized setups that could move quickly without interrupting real moments as they unfolded. Rather than over-lighting or over complicating scenes, I wanted the camera to feel like an additional family member, in rhythm with the subjects and the emotional truth of the space. Filming a young child reminded me that the story will not wait for you—so the cinematography had to be ready, gentle and willing to play. - Melanie McLean Brooks @melmcbrooks (DP) @lifelinesthefilm @hannahdocs (Dir / Producer) @robinhonan (Dir / Producer) @flyinggiant (production / 2nd cam) @yang.mandrew (AC) Cody Troyer (Sound)

Hey friends — I wanted to share something that really impacted me a couple of years ago: Doc House (@dochouse ) by @vancarr . Her approach to vĂ©ritĂ© cinematography and the BUSINESS side of being a cinematographer met me at such a perfect moment in my career. I’m a lifelong learner and someone who really values film community, and this course brought both in such a meaningful way. Thoughtful, inspiring, practical — truly one of those experiences that sticks with you. It absolutely delivered. I did the mentorship part and was able to have peer review too! [Highly recommend!] And now, all of us are still in touch. Highly recommend! This course focuses on the skills that will have the biggest impact on your career: đŸŽ„ How to light a great interview: The single most powerful skill to impress producers, elevate your work, and survive a downturn! đŸŽ„ How to shoot a great scene: Moving beyond "coverage" to capture emotional moments that give a story meaning (and make editors love you) đŸŽ„ How to make cinematic frames on the fly: Working with available light, inspiration from narrative films, and delivering elevated visual sequences, even amidst in vĂ©ritĂ© chaos. đŸŽ„ How to develop your visual style: A special update for 2026, this round includes a new planning framework for intentional visuals, including a strategy using ShotDeck (even for the most observational stories) đŸŽ„ Business strategies for landing premium work, even now: How to strongly define your niche, position yourself as a "go-to" hire, align your skills with current market opportunities, network effectively, step into thought leadership, and create meaningful relationships that drive your career forward. This course is about more than technical skills. It’s about creating a space where you can finally relax, stop pretending you have it all figured out, and actually learn. ❀ We also tackle the deeper questions: - How to balance ambition with joy, relationships, and sustainability. - How to navigate financial concerns openly and honestly. - How to plan a career you love for the long term. 🚹 Registration Closes April 3—Don’t Miss Out! /3e67feze

About the Industry Fair Cocktail Party
.đŸ„‚âœš Miranda Bailey absolutely owned the room — legend, straight-shooter, and somehow also the warmest human. She dropped wisdom, delivered a few perfectly timed reality checks, and had everyone walking out like: “Wait
I can do that.” Great drinks. Better conversations. And inspiration in the air. If you were there, you get it. If you weren’t
don’t do that to yourself next time. 😜💜🎬 And many thanks to the incredible team— hosts @cabinhousestudios , planning powerhouse @mih_eventplanning and catering team @culinary_mischef . What a beautiful night!✹📾 @melmcbrooks

Friday morning our Marketing Chair, @melmcbrooks , had the honor of representing WIFMCO on @greatdaycotv , sharing the heart behind our upcoming Industry Fair and the community that makes this work matter. Opportunities like this are about more than promoting an event — they’re about shining a light on the artists, crew members, students, and professionals who are a part of our vibrant film and media ecosystem right here in Colorado. Somewhere along the way I stopped being just the filmmaker and became the person quietly arranging snacks like it’s a still life. At this point I’m one grazing board away from adding craft services / food stylist to my credits. 🍓🎬 Thanks @foodandwine for the chocolate olive oil cake recipe. It was divine!

🚁 New campaign series. Our latest collaboration with Colorado WINS spotlights the public workers behind the scenes. In this story, we ran alongside a local helitech crew whose precision, skill, and trust make high-stakes operations possible. We’re honored to help tell stories that center the people doing the work — on the ground and in the air. They make Colorado run! #nonprofits #campaign Director: @melmcbrooks DP: @flyinggiant Cam: @dp_graim AC: @yang.mandrew Editor: @matty_schmalz Color: @pinto_color

He embraces me for who I am and continually speaks my ever-evolving love languages— dancing in public, seeing places many won’t, hiking to a beach just to listen to the waves, watching endless movies and enjoying alllll the meals together. Love this love. đŸ–€

This kiddo!!?? Pure magic.đŸ„č Getting to witness these small, curious, joy-filled moments inside two Colorado early education centers these last few days has been such a gift. Through our work with @teachcolorado , we’ve had the chance to witness SO MUCH heart and care in our local community. And honestly, meeting these heroes has been a much needed dose of humanity. More of this, please! #nonprofits #storytelling
