🔥 — @headgeneve @meliarog #cinéma #head #headgeneve #soundrecording #soundcheck #geophone #hydrophones #microphone #electromagnetique #parabole

My practice lead PhD that I started in 2024 at Le Fresnoy @lefresnoy took me this January to Lanzarote where I spent a month with the SECAC @secac_cetaceos 🐬 I could focus on bioacoustic, also discovering this whole new world of cetaceans oceanic soundscapes. For the last two weeks, I was joined by the amazing DoP Charlotte Muller @merlu_tutu to start a film/sound installation project with the scientists in the lab, documenting their care gestures. I am so thankful for this great experience that transformed my ears forever. This acousmatic position to listen on a boat, not knowing what we hear shows the importance of sound into the study of non-human animals. Thank you to the University of Lille (CEAC) to have supported this project through the short mobility program. 🙏 And thank you to Francesca Fusar Poli @francescafusarpoli who shared her deep knowledge about cetaceans. Thank you Cecilia and Sofia, my two students colleagues for this time together, cleaning bones and listening to clics and burst pulsed sounds! Thank you WeWhale and @gonzaloapz @wewhale_org for your collaboration on our sightings despite the crazy weather. This project is only at the beginning and we are looking to develop it further so if you ever want to know more, don’t hesitate to get in touch 🎤💙☀️ #acousticecology #fieldrecording #bioacoustics #artisticresearch #phd

It’s been a jam packed and insanely special three days for the @listening.as.porosity project here with @mathias.arr.tk @actionpyramid @meliarog and @colinelachiver . What an amazing group of artists and people! Here’s some snippets from the excellent programme curated by Mathias… it all kicked off with the DIY hydrophone workshop, then listening session on quadrophonic setup and concluding with a public symposium on critical/ethical field recording practices. To the people who came to each event and those who came to all, thank you! Thank you for being so kind, so generous and so supportive of this project but also this space. For being so present in seeing, hearing and feeling. I know I say it a lot but I don’t take this work for granted, it’s truly an honour to be part of this space with you! I also said it during the events but all the equipment at Listen has been donated throughout the years and thanks to Mathias we now have a subwoofer and quadrophonic system for artists to use, what a dream come true!!!! This means even deeper listening futures together 🥹 And last but not least thank you to the super chefs and staff at @palmtreekitchen for the delicious food and always being so good to us xxxx The love is real!!!

🎤 Open call - DIY field recording practices ‼️Extended Deadline : 15th February 🗓️
📚As part of a pre-survey for a future book project, the research team of Enceladus Press – Mélia Roger, Pauline Nadrigny, and Pauline Gouablin – is gathering testimonies and examples of DIY environmental field recording practices. @enceladuspress @paulinegouablin @paulinelodz ⚒️ From a self-built contact microphone used to record ants, to a metal hanger hung in a tree to capture bird calls, or an improvised hand-made windscreen, we are interested in any inventive, handmade, or repurposed tool used to explore outdoor soundscapes. 🎞️🔉To participate, please send an email to [email protected] including: - A photograph of your equipment (indoor or outdoor) - A description of how you use it and, if applicable, instructions for how to build it - A sound file or a short description of a sound you recorded with it 📸 The goal of this pre-survey is to identify practices and people with whom we may organize, in a second phase, a more in-depth conversation or meeting. Image and sound rights: Please indicate in your message that you authorize Enceladus Press to temporarily use the images and/or sound materials you submit as part of this pre-survey. #fieldrecording #listening #diy #doityourself #wildlifesoundrecording #wsrs #sonatura #enceladuspress #book #mitpress #nadringy #soundstudies #naturesound

Presenting the first of the three artists involved in ‘Listening as Porosity’: Mélia Roger Mélia Roger (*1996, she/her) is a field recordist and artist engaged to inspire ecological change with environmental and empathic listening. Her work explores the sonic poetics of the landscape, searching for the invisible layers between human and non-humans. Coming from a sound engineering background (ENS Louis-Lumière in Paris, ZHdK in Zurich), Mélia is developing a twofold activity between immersive 7.0.2 sound recordings within HAL, as well as a more experimental and naturalistic approach to listening. Now at Le Fresnoy, she is a practice-based PhD candidate at the University of Lille, focusing on the relations between sound arts and acoustic ecology. @meliarog @listengallery @listening.as.porosity

Photosynthesis in Pond Field recording by Mélia Roger @meliarog France "Oxygen bubbles explode slowly on the plants making photosynthesis in a small pond with 10cm water level. The hydrophones are recording the sounds of the oxygen released by the leaves under the sun, sometimes crackling or almost singing. Recorded with home-made hydrophones." From 4th to 6th December 2025, Free admission + donations strongly encouraged Listen Gallery, Glasgow G2 8JX “Listening as Porosity” is a three-day public programme imagined by Mathias Arrignon, Action Pyramid and Mélia Roger, focussed on relational field recording practices, and hosted at Listen Gallery. Holding an immersive listening session, a technical workshop, and a concluding public symposium, the event will create an engaging and participatory environment where audiences can experience and reflect on sound in its ecological, cultural, and emotional dimensions. At the heart of “Listening as Porosity” lies the idea of field recording beyond mere documentation, approaching it instead as a porous practice where sound, memory, and imagination interweave. What lies behind the act of playing a recording of a lively forest to a deforested area? Can we scale down our listening to hear the murmur of the soil or the quiet breath of an aquatic plant? Why does the sound of a glacier collapsing create such an emotional resonance in us? How does it feel to use a microphone that you have assembled with your own hands? Why do we record and why does it matter? “Listening as porosity” opens up a carefully crafted space for collective listening, reflection, skill-sharing and encourages the possibility of learning, and mostly unlearning. Sharing here some insights of the field recordings made for Verena Paravel’s next project for the @okayamaartsummit opening at the end of the month. We had an intense (hot summer!) time with @whatnao in Okayama listening to bats, crows, rice fish, ants, slugs, cicadas, drosophilas and roly polies. Thank to all the scientists who have opened their labs to our ears and microscopes. 🎤🐌 Photo 5 : Verena Paravel Photo 7 : @whatnao #fieldrecording #japan #film #sound #listening #insects #tremology #underwater #slug #okayama @dpa_microphones @ambientrecording @lom.label @zoomsoundlab

Two weeks ago @gregoirechauvot and I were invited by Verena Paravel to give a field recording workshop at @silent.green in Berlin 🎤🫧 It was a beautiful moment to share some ideas on sonic perspectivism and more-than-human ears, exploring different recording techniques. Thank you everyone who took part in this moment 🫶 This day ended with the listening session @joshuabonnetta ´s work « the pines », a beautiful sound research following a whole year of a pine tree, edited out in 4 hours of listening, one hour by season ☀️ ~ it was great to attend with the best company of @pablodiserens Photo 2 : @silent.green Photo 3 : @pablodiserens #fieldrecording #berlin #silentgreen #verenaparavel #sound #listening #workshop @gregoirechauvot @silent.green
