Last night I had the opportunity to attend a book presentation by David Epstein @davidepstein He’s a remarkable sports scientist, journalist and @ethswildkits ETHS alumn. His latest work is titled “Inside the Box, How Constraints Make Us Better”, and was preceded by one of my favorite titles about human development, “Range, Why Generalists Triumph In A Specialized World”. The conversation was moderated by none other than Megan Twohey @mega2e , a NYT investigative reporter who, along with Jodi Kantor brought to light the Harvey Weinstein case. She was awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. If you have interest in what helps people thrive or improve in their fields of interest, these books are a must.

How did I start? I was fired from the student newspaper. @mega2e ’s debut was rough too. Proof that your entry into the workplace does *not* need to be flawless. (Is anyone’s?) I wrote How to Start, and am confessing my own humiliating experience, to provide support and reassurance to anyone who needs it. Starting has never been easy. This era is making it harder. We need to bring young people all the help we can.

How special it was to accompany the honorary doctorate ceremony of Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor with live music at KU Leuven. An event honoring such courage and integrity deserves a moment of reflection. I find that live music can help emphasize the resonance of a story and it was a true honor to provide that musical backdrop for a day, celebrating their impact. Today @mega2e and I sat down for a post-publication lunch with Manny Fernandez and @sarah_hurtes , who worked for years to tell the story of how Chavez victimized women. Such painful accounts, such brave sources, so many questions about how to regard the Chavez legacy. But I want to note: nine years after Megan and I began investigating Weinstein, even amid great backlash, women are still coming forward.

Megan Twohey, my partner in breaking the Harvey Weinstein story, is pure steel. Incisive as hell. But listen to the story of her first job. This video goes out to anyone who fears the world won’t tolerate anything less than perfection. Gonna keep making these, because it’s a tough time to start out.
