Almost finished my 2 week full circle residency at @varc_arts in rural Northumberland. Enjoying the change in blackthorn blossom in the time I’ve been here. Different blackthorn trees are in different states of blossom depending if they are in sheltered spots or not, some have almost lost all their petals while the ones on the moorland are still springing from their buds. I’m loving these slow changes, markers of time. I’m loving making work for me again too! Having brain space away from a loud 3 year old to think and make.

I had a lovely morning glazing with howdon community hub and @helixartsne and rushed home to print with Lego and laser cut chickens before I rush off to load a kiln. Not sure what this post is about really, something about the hectic bizarre life as an artist and about celebrating successes. Suspect it’s more about squiggles and purple chickens. No idea where this fits in the back to back ceramic workshops I’m running this week…
Work created by @equalarts at Blaydon library @gatesheadlibraries , I spent a lovely 7 weeks with some absolute gems! And we made work all about storing and collecting memories, making jars, dishes, shelves and these wreaths as an act of celebration. I loved working with some amazing people and working right on my doorstep.
Some of the work made by people @ageukgateshead as part of work I’m doing with Gateshead council. Based on ideas of nature and industry combining on sections of riverside park. It was brilliant to hear stories of bridges being built the Garden festival and Gateshead indoor market. The work has been amazingly produced by Elizabeth Kane.
Today I’m packing work made by people at Baltic, with @theculturalspring , with @equalarts and Gateshead riverside project. Due to a large hole in Rowans nursery roof I have a helper. Please excuse all crayons and fir cones that may be packed with the work. I’m about to fire work for @comfreyproject but need to first remove all the baby wipes that are decorating the kiln. This picture is not an accurate depiction of the chaos, there was a spaniel having its ears colour matched and a lot of bubble wrap at one point!
I spent April and May working with @helixartsne@gatesheadartdiamonds@comfreyproject and Highfield house on a project at Gibside National trust @northeastnt , making ceramics and textile artworks based on the idea of blossom. We did the first few workshops in the walled garden where the blossom was just starting to bloom and opened the exhibition today as apples are starting to appear on branches of some of the heritage apple trees. The work is in the stables and is on from now until the end of September.

About a year ago Rachel from @thebiscuitfactorygallery emailed me asking if I was interested in making a commission for the biscuit factory to celebrate 20 years of the gallery. She didn’t know at the time but I was in neonatal intensive care in Middlesbrough, having just had Rowan. The same day I’d been told I wasn’t going to get statutory maternity pay and I didn’t really know how life was going to work out. But with lots of support, and a baby strapped to me, I made one of the biggest artworks I’ve ever made. This whole year has been a balancing act of being a mum and artist, and sometimes both. Also tiny artist assistant for hire.
I want to say how lucky I am working with amazing north east cultural organisations like @thebiscuitfactorygallery and @balticgateshead who have made coming back to work with a tiny baby such a great experience. They have been so supportive of me as a freelancer during my maternity leave and so flexible with making it possible to feed Rowan in the middle of working with lovely groups. I don’t know of any other workplaces who would be so flexible and supportive to us!

Rowan Nye Randall Hudson stormed into the world almost 3 weeks ago today. After a little help from the RVI and James Cook hospital we are home and trying to figure it all out together.
