When I started thinking about artwork for Sunken Sun Sunken Soul, I immediately knew it needed to be an oil painting by a master hand. I knew @serpent.above 's work from the metal. I wrote him that I have a weird choir album but it has a dark and heavy soul, and asked if he'd agree to create the cover. He took up the challenge.
I asked him to imagine Jerusalem burning in the fires of hell. But not the city of flesh and blood, not the city I hate and love, the place where this project was born; the city of myth, the city in the heavens, the eschatological city, that appears at the end of days. I thought of Dante, of Virgil, of Aeneas, of Orpheus, of Delacroix, of Messiaen, of Saint John, of Job, of Ignacio de Loyola, of Teresa of Avila, of other contemplators of the infernal and the apocalypse. I tried to distance it from the here and now.
But it's always the same Doom's Day.
The strange process of cracking this art, of telling the ancient visual myth underlying this record, which speaks of songs who were never born, who reincarnated into their current form. Letting Nir and his beautiful craftsmanship animate it is a process I'll cherish. Thank you @serpent.above 🔥

Tomorrow, Friday of All Saints at 19:00 at the Sala Noble @conventagusti Barcelona - a very rare work-in-progress screening of the new film @excessive_kontakt is working on in dialogue with the research I'm doing, and featuring lots of me in various metal band t-shirts recording rivers across the peninsula in an attempt to recreate the divine voice heard by a 16th-century nun -- but mostly stunning riverscapes and water formations caught by the most patient observer I know (who sometimes disappeared for hours into deep gorges without warning and I thought was sucked into the waterfall vortex).

Developed through a residency at @brittenpearsarts , the project explores the deep musical and cultural connections between Judeo‑Spanish (Ladino), Sephardic, Arabic and Ibero‑Christian traditions, reimagined through a contemporary lens.
The performance features special guests Syrian oud virtuoso and singer Nawras Altaky @nawrasaltaky and soprano Kate Huggett @katehuggettsi (HOWL vocal ensemble, Shards Voices), offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience this extraordinary cross‑cultural collaboration live.

The outrageous album we've just released - "Sunken Sun, Sunken Soul" is in fact not solely an album but three interrelated things: the album, a text booklet (more on that in another post) and a three-part video.
This beautiful documentation was made by @excessive_kontakt@tamirfaingold (with the help of @tteffer ) while we were recording live and it was a hell of a thing to do... we needed everything to somehow both sound and look reasonable on the same take, each time; we literally only had like 2 full rehearsals with everyone present; we had to be super zen about coordinating between the sound, video, stills, lights, troubleshooting, everyone's hunger, fatigue, voice power, and patience.
I'm so grateful that we have it cause now we can all see the double chin I have when I sing + basically have a living memory of those crazy two days.

היום יוצא לאוויר האינטרנט אלבום חדש בלייבל של מזקקה, “שקעה חמה, שקעה נפשי - קינה לזמר העברי” מאת תומר דמסקי והמקהלה הקוונטית.
זה פרויקט שאפתני ומרובה משתתפים שהוא בו זמנית יצירה מוזיקלית, ויזואלית ומחקרית.
האלבום מורכב מעיבודים מודרניים ורדיקליים שכתבה תומר דמסקי (ואקל קונטקט) לשירים עבריים אזוטריים שהושרו בארץ לפני קום המדינה, שירי עבודה, קוממיות, דם, יזע ודמעות.
המקהלה הקוונטית - זמרות, זמרים, נשפנים ופרקשניסט - בניה ובנותיה של הסצנה הנסיונית בירושלים, התכנסה לפני כשנתיים במשכנות שאננים ובניצוחה של דמסקי הקליטה את השירים האלה בליבה של הסערה שאנו עדיין נתונים בה.
זו יצירה מוזיקלית שפוסעת לתוך הארכיון ונותנת חיים מחודשים לדנ”א תרבותי רדום.

האלבום הזה הוא מסמך פנימי. הפוסט הזה בעברית והחברים והקולגות הבינ״ל יצטרכו להתמודד עם תרגום אוטומטי.
מעולם לא שחררתי אלבום עם השם שלי בכותרת. זה קורה עם אלבום מלחמה. עם אלבום פוליטי. זו דרך מאוד לא פופולרית ואפילו דפוקה לעשות אלבום כזה: במקום לצרוח נגד הציונות וכל מה שהיא גזלה וחירבה, עשיתי מחקר על השירים שהיו חלק צמוד צמוד מהגוף שהיא גידלה, שירים שאמנם זורם בהם גם דם אחר של ימים קדומים של גלות ופזורה טרום השתלטות סיסטמטית על אדמות פלסטיניות, אבל הדם הזה התערבב בציונות עצמה, והשירים האלה הושרו על אותה אדמה שקומיסרים בריטים החרימו מפלאחים פלסטינים בכסף של לורדים כי זה הסתדר להם לאימפריה שיהיו שם יהודים באותו רגע. בזמנו בחרתי שירים מדכאים, עצובים, של תסכול ושברון; אבל בסוף צצו גם כמה מלאי אור והומור. אלה מייצגים את האפ-סייד של להיות בניו הפריבילגים של הצד הגוזל. אנחנו גדלנו לתוך בית ירוק שרגע לפני זה היה של מישהו אחר ואף פעם לא סיפרו לנו את זה, ועכשיו מאוחר מדי והכל כבר חרא. ״אמא היה לנו בית ירוק / הבית איננו ואבא רחוק״, רק הפוך. לנו היה אולפן וכמה גרושים בשביל להפיק את הפרויקט הזה. ואיפה נכנס הממד המיסטי עתיק היומין, החיבור של המילים של השפה הזאת לתוואי הקרקע? לא נכנסת לזה כרגע.
אולי זה בעצם הסיפור שלי, סיפור על מישהי שגדלה ברחם האינדוקטרינציה הקיבוצית ועכשיו מכה על חטא שאינו שלה, או משהו כזה. עכשיו אני רחוקה משם ואולי לכן כבר לא מתביישת להגיד דברים כאלה. ההורים לא פה להסתכל עליי במבט מבולבל ולא להבין למה אני מפנה עורף לכל מה שהצמיח אותי. אמא שלי כבר לא חיה בשביל להתווכח איתי על זה. פה יותר קל להסתובב עם וודג׳ אנטי ציוני ולהסביר שאני נגד, שאני רק היורשת של הנזק הזה, להתנער. אבל האמת היא שאי אפשר להתנער, לא משנה כמה חזק תנערי - הרגבים של הDNA ושושלת אבותייך לא יפלו ממך כמו פתיתי שלג על הרצפה. אבל לשיר אפשר, כמו הקלישאה, וזה מה שעשינו.
ד״ר עודד ארז כתב שהאלבום ״הוא קינה לזמר העברי כמו שקונצ׳רטו הוא לכינור״: השיר עצמו הוא הגיבור של הסיפור. אבל יותר מאשר שהשירים עצמם נוברים בקולות קדומים ובזהויות עתיקות, האלבום הזה מורכב מקולות חיים של האנשים ששומעים בו, שבוקע מהם כל הגוף והנשמה שהם שמו בזה. התקופה שבה עבדנו על זה ביחד היא מהמטורללות בחיי, ואני כל כך אסירת תודה ואוהבת אותם על זה.

Sobre el coro:
El "Quantum Choir" es un coro mixto implacable que funciona como una banda. Está formado por personas que cantan, gritan, susurran, palmean, tocan percusión y soplan. Está dedicado a diseccionar textos antiguos, canciones de folk y pop, sagradas y profanas. Trabajaremos y aprenderemos a partir de un repertorio único, que incluye interpretaciones radicales de música devocional de diversas culturas, cantando en castellano, latín, árabe, arameo, hebreo, ladino, proto-semítico y más.
El grupo estará dirigido por la vocalista y compositora interdisciplinar Tomer Damsky, explorando su extraordinaria colección de canciones y métodos vocales, contemplando y co‑creando, afinando y afilando un sonido idiosincrático con una energía performativa sin concesiones.

Aquí va otra cosa que está ocurriendo: estamos creando un refugio rural para prácticas creativas en una tierra remota del Matarraña, en Teruel.
Se llama **Silbos**. Por qué? Porque mi diccionario favorito, el "Tesoro de la lengua castellana o española" de Covarrubias (1611), dice:
“Silbo: El sonido que se hace con la boca, o el que hace algún pájaro. También es el ruido que hace el aire.”
Este lugar habla, murmura, chapotea y trina por sí mismo, y convoca no solo a quienes tienen paciencia para buscar nombres en diccionarios del siglo XVII (y no solo a quienes tienen paciencia para quienes tienen esa paciencia), sino también a quienes están abiertos a desprenderse un poco de la autodestrucción centrada en lo humano y a dejar espacio para otra cosa.
No es casualidad que este proyecto surja de personas en una búsqueda constante de aquello que es más que materia: llámalo interser, llámalo hipersensual, llámalo místico, llámalo conciencia, llámalo más-que-humano, o como quieras… o ni siquiera lo llames.
