On the occasion of the closing event of our first-ever LABA Alumni Exchange Program, we chose to celebrate what exchange can truly look like - through acts of transmission: rituals, blessings, movement, stories, and shared gestures. CONVOCATORIA PARA ARTISTAS Y CREADORES CULTURALES Inscríbete ahora en el programa de becas de LABA Barcelona- Laboratorio de cultura judía. ¿A qué me apunto? A un año de nueve encuentros de estudio e investigación en Barcelona, donde exploraremos textos judíos clásicos en un entorno abierto, no religioso y accesible; seguido por un proceso de creación y, finalmente, LABALive, un espacio donde compartiremos con el público nuestro proceso creativo. El aprendizaje será la base para que cada participante desarrolle una obra contemporánea dentro de su propia disciplina artística o cultural, creando un espacio inspirado en textos judíos. Cada año trabajamos un tema. En 2026 exploramos “Nombre” a partir de la Torá, el Talmud, la Mishná, el Zóhar y textos contemporáneos: cómo los nombres, y el acto de nombrar, pueden ocultar o revelar, moldear el mundo y renovarlo. Cada fellow recibe una beca de 1.000 €, además de apoyo para la producción de proyectos y para los eventos LABALive. Fecha límite: 5 de diciembre. Más información y inscripción en bio

Sharing some notes from my time as an artist in residence at Casa Adret, Barcelona. Where I spent the last two months as part of @laba.bcn @labaglobal alumni exchange program. Casa Adret is the oldest house in Barcelona where people still live in and it is haunted by friendly ghosts. ********************************************************A peek into the studio, some public events we held and the research made in @catedralbcn de Barcelona with @estudiosjudiosbcn . As part of the LABA Europe Exchange Program, artist Danielle Alhassid (LABA New York alumna) joins LABA Barcelona for a residency with public events. Together with scholar Elazar (Elik) Elhanan, she presents a collaborative practice that brings together academic research, archives, and stop-motion animation. The conversation centers on the Tsenerene, a 17th-century Yiddish text often referred to as the “women’s Bible,” tracing the movement of Yiddish culture from Amsterdam to contemporary New York. Meet the LABA BCN ‘Name’ Fellows for 2026: Shell Hakim | Visual Artist, Architect, Writer As a child, I often asked my mother about the origin of my name, Shell. She offered different stories each time - sometimes claiming it honored my great-grandfather Shaul, other times referring me to the seashells that decorate the shores. The truth remained elusive and open to interpretation. In my mother tongue, my name also functions as a common preposition denoting relationships between objects - like “of” in English. This linguistic coincidence renders me ubiquitous on the pages of literature yet peculiar in person, as though I carry something both everywhere and nowhere at once. The repeating chorus of my childhood “Shell mi ata?” - meaning both “Shell, who are you?” and “who do you belong to?” - taught me early to expect questions and provide answers. Today I enjoy playing with this elusiveness of meaning, reflecting the question back: what do you think my name means? Meet the LABA BCN ‘Name’ Fellows for 2026: Adam Iungman | Visual artist כז וַיִּבְרָא אֱלֹהִים אֶת-הָאָדָם בְּצַלְמוֹ, בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים בָּרָא אֹתוֹ: זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה, בָּרָא אֹתָם. “And God created the human in His image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27 The phrase “male and female He created them” has been interpreted in several ways. One reading understands the first human as androgynous - originally containing both male and female within a single being, later separated. In this interpretation, the verse points to a deeper idea of unity and duality within the human condition.
