Very excited to announce that today marks the release of the new EP by MIDDLE NAME JOHN - ‘is it the bills?’. The EP is the follow up to the debut album ‘Obviously Confidential’ which was released in 2024. Lyrically, the five tracks expand on his incisive social observations of the personal and the collective whilst his musical palette leans more towards punk-jazz (instantly noticeable due to the prevalent live drums) and places a greater emphasis on electronic experimentation. Features contributions from long term collaborators Nix Bakx (guitar and samples), Alessandro La Barbera (mix and production) and Max Mella (production and bass) and also features Snorkel’s Frank Byng on drums. Last Friday‘s session with @maxmella_ was pure magic—a 60-minute vinyl journey blending soulful 70s/80s grooves, crisp jazz vibes infused with Flying Lotus’ cosmic glitch-hop textures and J Dilla’s buttery, soul-sampled swing, plus intimate artist stories that left everyone deeply immersed and buzzing with connection. Dear Musiclovers, we wish you all a happy new year! We will start the first session of 2026 with a very interesting artist: Max Mella is an Italian-German non-binary artist, music producer, multi-instrumentalist, and DJ based between Berlin and London. Drawing from their experience in both cities’ diverse music scenes, their approach to producing and DJing is genre-fluid, blending elements of electronica, soul, hip-hop, ambient, house, and glitch into their creative practice. As one half of the duo bluebox, they have released music on Roya (Warp) and received support from BBC Radio 1 and Worldwide FM. Max also collaborates and produces with artists in both cities and DJs regularly. They are a member of the boundary-pushing live electronic label and collective HolyShift, which curates and presents bimonthly gigs. They will curate an eclectic mix of songs, textures and grooves that move and inspire them ranging from hip hop to electronica and soul via jazz and ambient.
