You may or may not be aware that the West is having one hell of a time kicking off shred season.
We got blessed with October snow, but no chairs were spinning. Fast-forward to late December and it’s been torrential rain, flooding, road closures—forces of nature and God’s will throwing elbows at our mountains, roads, and season.
I’ve got a cabin 15 minutes from Stevens Pass. Or I did. With the road wrecked, that “home mountain” is now a four-hour mission—when and if they even open.
Enter Mt. Baker.
I’ve lived in Washington nearly 30 years. I’ve been to Baker every year, but back in the day it felt far, and it didn’t have the snow-free features I wanted as a younger lad—because Baker didn’t have a park.
Now take today’s situation and drop a bunch of Stevens refugees onto Baker. It could’ve gone one of two ways:
Either we’re treated like Somali refugees in Minnesota—no assimilation, city kids invading a local hill…
Or we’re welcomed with open arms.
What actually happened blew me away.
The shredding was all-time, but it was the locals, the employees, and the stakeholders that made it special. The fact that the Bros welcomed a crew of displaced Stevens riders, showed us lines, and made us feel like Baker could be a second home—that’s what this thing is supposed to be about.
Merry Christmas, snowboarding.
Thanks for delivering the presents early.
