Bottle kicking is a long-standing tradition held every Easter Monday in Hallaton, Leicestershire, where the villages of Hallaton and Medbourne compete in a physical and often muddy contest. Both men and women take part in the event, which begins with a procession through the village, the blessing of a hare pie, and a ceremonial sharing of food. The game itself involves three wooden barrels, known as “bottles,” which teams try to move across a stream and into their own village’s boundary. The first team to get two of the three bottles home wins. With few rules and a large playing area across open fields, the event can last for hours and is a significant part of the local calendar, drawing participants and spectators from nearby communities.
