Australian singer-songwriter @matthewifield first captured audiences with his viral vocal covers, but it’s his deep, intentional connection with his global fanbase that truly defines his artistry. As a mixed-race artist of Malaysian descent, his relationship with his heritage is an evolving journey.
Ifield’s musical path took off unexpectedly – and secretly. “I remember this crazy feeling when I had my first viral moment – a feeling of both excitement and nervousness, because I realised I had to tell my parents that I had been posting on social media,” he recalls. Thankfully, his family fully embraced his passion.
That same sense of familial support now anchors his relationship with his fans across the Asian diaspora. “Being on stage with them feels less like a show and more of a conversation, as if it were a family gathering,” he shares. He even translates his songs into native languages like Korean and Indonesian, noting that the familiarity “gives them comfort in the same way that I feel comfortable around my family.”
Reflecting on #APIHeritageMonth, Matthew admits he’s felt out of place at times. “As a mix of Western and Asian… I have definitely felt like I don’t quite fit in or am not fully accepted by either culture.” However, touring Asia and connecting with his fans has inspired him to explore his identity further, noting, “I’m connecting more and more with my Asian heritage as I grow older.”
