Happy Birthday Willie Mays! Today we officially designate the Willie Mays Highway connecting Treasure Island to the first San Francisco exits—one of the very routes generations of fans have taken on their way to cheer on the San Francisco Giants. I was proud to be one of the coauthors of the bill that got this done with my colleagues Senator Dodd and Senator Scott Wiener. Baseball has always been more than a game—it’s a shared experience that brings people together across generations, neighborhoods, and backgrounds. Willie Mays embodied that spirit. He inspired kids, just like me, to dream, families to gather, and communities to unite in the simple joy of the game. Today, as we dedicate this highway, we’re not just marking miles—we’re honoring a legacy of excellence, resilience, and unity that continues to define the Giants and this city.

"A new California bill authored by Assemblymember Matt Haney has been introduced to help abused animals get adopted into safe environments faster. Animals involved in cruelty cases are currently required to stay in shelters for prolonged periods of time while evidence is being collected. The new bill (AB 2344) will allow the animals affected to be transferred to care facilities, foster homes, or be available for adoption after 30 days. "Animals are completely dependent on us for care and protection, and when that trust is shattered through abuse, we have a moral obligation to act," Assemblymember Matt Haney said. "Animal cruelty is unacceptable, and when animals are held for unnecessary periods, this puts a roadblock to their recovery. AB 2344 will streamline that transfer process, providing a tool for courts and shelters to help animals receive earlier transfers into appropriate care."

92 years old, my predecessor (a couple times removed) former State Assemblymember Mayor Willie Brown still has so much to teach. The longest serving Speaker of the Assembly. The first Black Mayor of San Francisco. Always listening when he's speaking. We are all students.

Today I was joined by @therealshannonlee (Bruce Lee’s daughter and CEO of the Bruce Lee Foundation) and various Asian cultural leaders and organizations to celebrate Bruce Lee Day in San Francisco. AB 2455 will establish May 17 as Bruce Lee Day in California, an annual statewide observance honoring the San Francisco-born martial arts icon’s lasting impact on film, culture and the Chinese American community. The proposal would make Bruce Lee the first Chinese American commemorated with a day in California state law. May 17 marks the day Lee returned to San Francisco at age 18, a pivotal moment that helped launch the next chapter of his career and global legacy. The bill adds Bruce Lee Day to California’s civic observances and encourages schools and community organizations to recognize his legacy through educational and cultural programming. It also acknowledges Lee’s role in challenging stereotypes and expanding representation for Asian Americans in entertainment and public life. Bruce Lee was a symbol of pride, resilience, and possibility for generations who rarely saw themselves reflected with strength and dignity. Born in San Francisco and celebrated around the world, he embodies the creativity and diversity that define California. Bruce Lee would be the first Chinese American to receive a day in California state law. It sends a clear message to every young person who feels unseen: your story and your dreams belong at the heart of California’s history.

The community of artists and independent venues are coming together because ticket scalping and extreme resale markups hurt everyone who makes live entertainment possible, not just the fans being priced out of shows. When tickets are treated like speculative commodities, artists lose connection with their audiences, independent venues struggle to build loyal fan communities, and money that should be supporting local music ecosystems instead goes to professional brokers and resale platforms exploiting demand. California is the heart of the music industry and home to more artists and live events than any other state. We have a duty to stand with fans, artists, and venues, not speculators and scalpers. This is about restoring common sense and making sure live music is about community and culture, not price-gouging and profiteering.
