Meena Harrisâ upbringing felt like something out of a Wonder Woman scene: strong women leading and redefining the world around them. The idea of men holding all the power felt foreign because it simply wasnât her lived experience. That worldview is at the heart of her newest book, Mayaâs Big Question, the third installment in her Ambitious Girl series.
In our latest #GettingSticky, we talk to the #1 New York Times bestselling author about having kids before getting married, why everyone in the family deserves a seat at the dinner table when discussing politics and the state of the world, and what it really looks like to raise ambitious girls right now.

Today is the BIG day! Itâs the publication of my new book MAYAâS BIG QUESTION. Continuing with the theme, âNo one can do everything, but everyone can do something,â this book teaches kids resilience through community and teamwork.
Given whatâs happening right now, it makes today feel rather small and insignificant. But Iâm reminding myself that I started writing childrenâs books back in 2017 in part to help parents talk to their kids about whatâs going on in the world.
This book specifically encourages kids to question the status quo. Having conversations about these kinds of topics may sound advanced for 4 year olds, but I believe raising the next generation of leaders and changemakersâor really, just decent humansâstarts with asking âwhy.â Turns out kids are already experts at doing that, and all we have to do is validate their curiosity.
MAYAâS BIG QUESTION is now available wherever books are sold! Please consider your local indie, and if you purchase at @booksoup this week you get a special gift ($130 value) with a *signed* book, thanks to our partners @sharpie@woombikesusa and @tonyschocolonely_us .
@ayannapressley@aoc and @wutrain read my book AMBITIOUS GIRL to highlight the need for universal childcare, and I have to warn you, this one really riles up kids (in the best way đ).
Fun fact, Rep. Pressley is in the book, and a character in the sequel A IS FOR AMBITIOUS looks suspiciously similar to AOC. This can only mean one thing: Mayor Wu has to be in the next one!!
