Mario Montero was the FIRST subject I photographed for my Firefighter book. I really had no idea how this project was going to go. New people, new places, new stories. Everything was exciting for me.  I spoke to Mario before we got started. I noticed he had a calm but courageous look in his eyes. He told me about an incident when he was trapped in a house fire that was quickly deteriorating. He called a “Mayday”. The smoke and building got so bad it became clear that the only option was to jump out a third story window, without his bailout belt! He described jumping from the third floor as “slow motion”. He kept telling himself it wasn’t going to hurt. When he landed, IT HURT. He knew he was badly injured. He had broken his back.   After months of hard work and rehab, thankfully, he was able to return to work. After hearing him describe this story, I was in a bit of a trance myself. I knew immediately that this would be a life changing project. I am so glad to have met such amazing people like Mario doing this book.
