To conclude the week-long run resulting in a 478,29% increase in my posting activities on this social media platform, I am excited to finally announce that my new album is out!! 'Is As Is' was recorded late September 2022 and consists of 9 originals I composed during and coming out of the pandemic. I had moved back to NY 9 months prior and was just starting to feel settled and back on my feet after a very tumultuous time. The experience of recording this music that I had worked hard on for the past year was immensely positive, not least because of the 3 incredible musicians I was fortunate enough to share the experience with- @stevencrammer@jacobsacksmusic@david.mirarchi ! It feels very good to finally be able to share this with the world, and I do hope you will take the time to listen!
@eivindopsvik did a fantastic job mixing and mastering, and Chris Benham from @big.orange.sheep did a great job as the engineer. In my humble opinion, the record sounds very good!

James Wengrow Crypsis Trio - CROPSEY CABIN out now (link in bio).
The second single from James Wengrow Crypsis Trio ventures into lyrical terrain with "Cropsey Cabin," a modern jazz piece built on melodic hooks drawn from Lydian, Suspended, and Messiaen harmonies, with the contrapuntal interplay between guitar and bass creating shimmering overtones. Improvisations over the form give way to a robust, freely improvised group departure before the melodic hooks are reintroduced to conclude the piece.

Brooklyn guitarist James Wengrow (@jameswengrow ) brings the heat with his trio debut: an asymmetrical math-rock/jazz burner that cycles through 3/4+5/8+3/4+7/8 like it’s nothing. Featuring Danish bassist Mathias Jensen (@mathiashjensen ) and drummer James Paul Nadien (@jamespaulnadien ).
This is the first glimpse of ‘Emissary’ — Wengrow’s debut album as bandleader, synthesizing avant-jazz, free improvisation, contemporary classical, and math-rock into something visceral and new. Recorded by Joseph Branciforte at Second Take Sound, mixed at Greyfade Studios, mastered by Brent Lambert.

XA8 with the quartet. My XA series of works started around fall 2024 as a way to catalog new piano oriented pieces, which would help me further evolve my compositional practice. After about a year of endless experimentation and critical thought I realized it would be good to put a group of friends together to start figuring out this music as a dialogue. I’m very appreciative of the time that Shinya, Noam & Mathias have spent with me on this stuff and I’m hoping to get it out on the bandstand soon.
XA8 is quite challenging due to the type of elasticity that I like to impose on it, yet when we pull it off it has such a beautiful, meditative intensity to it.
